I am looking at an 01 crew 3.3. Is this a good motor or should I hold out for the supercharged version?

Get that one, and throw a supercharger on it.  The Eaton Supercharger in the SC edition SUCKS!!!!  Plus you'll spend less on insurance if you have a non-SC edition.

Which kind would you recomend? Would a turbo be better? How would this affect mpg? Thanks in advance.

I've owned two frontiers, a 98 XE 4x4 K/C with a 4 banger, and a 04 S/C 4x4 Crew Cab Long Bed. I would say that even though the Eaton does not have snap your head back power it is no wimp. I went with the factory set up because I wanted a warrenty, if you put a aftermarket supercharger on a truck with a warrenty Nissan will void it faster then you could say "void"! With some of the sensors costing upwards of $1500 to replace (evap Sensor) is it worth it? Thats something you have to decide. I love mine, at 80mph I still have plenty of power to fly by most cars on hills. Good luck!

If you want to go with power to fly down the road.

Get a frontier with the KA24DE motor, 5 Speed, 2wd.  The motor is the same that is found in the S14 (2nd generation 240sx)  You can go to JWT and get a bunch of goodies for this thing.  Turbos, cams and such.

Like I said in the PM that I sent, the 3.3L 4x4 doesn't have a great top end.  I test drove a SC edition and was not impressed.  In fact, I was quite dissappointed.  My little truck can do burnouts better than that thing could.  But the 3.3L does have a better towing capacity.

It all depends upon what you need a truck for.  Mine is for my system, and to go back and forth from work.  The 2.4L 2wd is all I needed.  I carry stuff every once in awhile, but never really having I need to tow.

I should be gettin my 01 crew in 2days. It is a 2wd with the 3.3 and when I drive it , it seemed pretty zippy. I was satisfied. My concern is about mpg. I also had an 04 frontier kc  2wd with a 2.4 and it seemed kind of sluggish. It had good speed on the hwy but, It did not have any zip in town. It had a fiberglass topper so maybe that slowed it down. I had to get rid of it because it was to small to carry the kids. This cc seems to have a pretty good sized back seat and, I will be able to haul stuff again. I will probably put on a k/n air filter to the stock intake unless an aftermarket intake is overwhelmingly better. I do not like engine noise or loudness at all and, I heard that some air intakes are kind of loud. When I had my 04 2.4 it seemed like I had to gun it pretty hard to make it quick and the engine noise would really scream through the firewall. That was a nuisance. I doubt that I will ever put any exhaust on my 01 because it would be to loud. When I drove the cc I felt like it was able to go 0-60 pretty quickly without excess engine noise. This is a 2wd cc 3.3 shortbed and it weighs 5000 lbs gvwr. Do you know how much the 4x4 same model weighs? I tried to look at the owners manual on this site but it did not say. Anyway this cc has stepup bars and, a tubular roofrack and, some kind of tubular bed extender, and a tonneau cover which I have not figured out how to work yet. I looked up what I could about reliability and such but I did not find much, just that it was a truck with minimal problems. Do you know which motor has more aftermarket parts between the 2.4 and the3.3? Oh! I almost forgot, I have a brand new still in box cold air intake for a 2004 frontier 2.4. I was going to put it on my truck but I did not keep it. I am pretty sure that it will not fit on my 01 with the3.3 so I need to sell it. I paid about 200.00 for it but I will take less. I think it was an A & M. Maybe the performance shop that I got it from will let me trade it in for one that wil fit my 01.  Thanks for the info.

Dealing with KA motors so much, I have learned one thing.

The motors have a lot of hidden power, it just requires A LOT of air to bring it out.  I can do burnouts with my truck if the conditions are right, and it has a lot of zip now.  All I've done is added a K&N stock filter, took off the air box, and put a Ravin muffler on.  Those unleashed a lot of power.

I did find out recently though... 85 does not cut it.  I have to use nothing but 91 in my truck.  Otherwise I lose gas mileage and power.

Edit: the 2 following sites are good place to start looking for goodies.

www.jimwolftechnology.com
www.4x4parts.com
