Has anybody done the Alpine Loop that runs between Ouray, Silverton and Lake City crossing several 14,000 foot passes?

What kind of lift do you have on your truck, what tires and wheels?

Tell us about it.

..

The wife and I done all the San Juan Mountains have to offer in our 4x4 Frontier. And we did every thing at least 3 times by in cluding our '76 JeepWagoneer and '99 Grand Cherokee. The '76 Wagoneer in 22 years did 261 Colorado Mountains Passes and The Frontier did about 50 or so. The scary ones are Black Bear and Red Cone (both one way passes) but all of the off road passes can be bad in bad weather. Pookeepies Gulch (up hill) is one of the difficult ones. I have videos of Us doing 34 of the off road passes...

Remember... driving off one of these roads on a cliff does not kill you... it's the sudden stop at the bottom!!!

Be sobber and safe.. Don S..

Just the person I'm looking for.

Haven't drink in 26 years so I'll definately be sober.

I've off roaded at several off road vehicle parks here in Nor Cal a few times.  I understand that you don't do it like they do in the TV commercials......slow, try to keep all the rubber on the ground, ride the high sides and not the ditches, etc.

I have a 2012 Nissan Frontier Kingcab 4x4, V6.  It has the appearance Pkg. so it came with the 18" wheels, all season tires however, no skid plates.  I measured and it has 9" clearance on flat ground.

Do you think it's possible to do the Alpine Loop, Engineer Pass and Cinnamin Pass in my stock truck without destroying something?  Oh, and I plan to be there in mid Sept. so the weather should still be dry (I hope!).

I'd rather do the Alpine Loop in my truck for two reasons.  1. So I can say I did it in my truck and 2.  So I don't have to shell out $200 to rent a Jeep Rubicon for the day.

What do you think.....can I do it?

First off Ouray is closest to all the trails with lots of bedrooms and eateries. 15 or 16 inch wheels with 31 inch tires are better. The trails change from year to year. Corkscrew Pass is the most beautiful. Fuel is high priced in the area. Snow starts in mid September but should not be a problem. Up-hill has the right of way on the narrow trails. When you have to pass pull over to the inside as close as possible so the passing vehicle can’t knock you over the cliff. If you’re taking pictures or going real slow let other get passed you.

Carry a little extra survival food/equipment just in case. Gear down when descending and save the brakes. ABS is not good on gravel… creep around down-hill curves and intersections.

Engineer Pass is 12,800 ‘ Imogene Pass is 13,114 ‘ If you’re a smoker it might be a problem. With fuel injection you should do OK. Normally aspirated California 4x4s sometimes can’t make it to the top without retuning.

Hope you have fun.. Don S..
