I have a 2001 Nissan Frontier XE 2WD. It does the strangest thing in the middle of driving down the highway. The dash board completely shuts down and the truck starts to sputter really bad. When you press the gas nothing happens maybe a little sputtering. It seems to be okay if you lightly press on the gas as long as the car doesnt exceed what seems to be 30 mph.
I have no engine lights, low fluids, or lack of gas. Does anyone have any suggestions??? Anything would be helpful.

Sputter;
Welcome to the group!
... Check the air and fuel filters first. The fuel pump may be going soft and not putting out the correct pressure. A partially plugged catalytic converter or a kinked exhaust pipe can also cause such things.
Good luck with it!
Have a good one and CUL.. Don S..

May be loosing power to the ecm, just happens at that speed. fuel filter would be wise to check as well, as previously stated.

I took my car to the dealer and referenced some of the things you guys mentioned. They said if the pump, filter, lines, or converter were the problem it would happen frequently. Since they were unable to reproduce the problem they say it is electrical something behind the dash. Not believing that is the problem I am not sure what else to do.
Any suggestions?
Thank you

The dealer said it maybe a circuit board behind the dash causing the problems..My problem is the $500 cost on a hunch and the fact it is not covered under my warrenty.
Does this sound right to anyone?

That would fall in the e c m category, one other thing to check is for a dead range in the distributor(unlikely but possible). Would have the dealer you took it to explain in detail what they think it may be, if there was a engine miss or sputter the event recorder should have logged it. so if no codes you may be loosing current to the e c m.

FYI It was indeed the circuit board behind the dash. I had them replace it last week and everything has been working fine. Thank you for your help. I just wish one of you owned a shop in NJ that would have fixed it for less.

Sputter, glad to hear you are back rolling again. Sorry bout the cost, am about 6hrs south of NJ so it doesn't help you alot. Where is this board in the dash, and what does it control, did they tell you? Most important did you ask for your old parts? Old dealer trick is to fix it and not replace with new, it is a good rule of thumb to ask for the old ones.
