I may be a bit daft but I've had clutch noise from my 98 4x4 King 5 spd whenever I engage the clutch.  It's been doing it for about 15K (2 years) on and off.  It has become more noisy as of lately.  I haven't experienced any trouble shifting whatsoever and had a regular mechanic "look into it" and reported that the clutch was operating normally.  Any ideas on what this could be?  I know that it is probably a throw out bearing but from my experience these things tend to fail when they make this much noise.  Has anyone else been experiencing this type of problem on their early model Frontiers?

I had the same problem and after a couple of years I decided to install a new clutch, throwout bearing and pilot bearing. I found the noise... it was caused by the pilot bushing being installed too far into the crank so only part of the transmission shaft was in the bushing. I don't know if it would have caused any problems, but I just got tired of the noise. BTW, if you remove the transmission it's a very good idea to replace the clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing and pilot bushing... cost me only about $160 in parts total, but it's a lot of work.
