2012 Frontier. Battery 3 months old. 30k miles truck.
I went to start it but I was lazy with the ignition and I let go of holding the key in the ignition start position right when it was about to start so it didn't start and made a little "puff" like it was about to at that split second.
Then when I went to start it again, the starter would not start just clicked. The lights were fine etc...
I wait 5 minutes, it started right up no problem.
This has happened only twice in a month so intermittent at best.
Not likely a dealer could solve it since not happening all the time.
The battery is new, when its running the battery guage says it's working. Should I troubleshoot the battery, or the starter or the starter relay?

I'd try cleaning all the battery connections and grounds.
I had a Chevy that acted like that... it was a connection.

Have seen the main battery feed to the starter be loose.
Can't remember what yrs., but there was a recall to
reposition the main starter wire.

The problem happened today for the first time since last November. Here is what happens:
I turned the key to ignition on, I observe the voltmeter is fine batter is 14 volts as usual. (according to the manual, before you start the car putting the key into on position will show you battery voltage).
I turn the key to start the car, and I hear 1 click. not a click click click, just 1 click, then nothing.
lights are fine etc..
I let the car sit for 10 minutes, and then it started fine. I did not make any change or touch anything.
I did notice over the winter, the starter sounded like it was turning a little slow on a very cold day, but it always worked.
There was no warning on this today. It is not cold out. I drove it last night fine. This morning it didn't work, I wait 10 minutes and then it works.
To go back and recap:
I had replaced the battery last May so battery is not even a year old.
I only replaced the battery not because of any sypmtom, never had a bad start before. I replaced battery because it was original and old but was working fine.
This problem started after I replaced the battery. But has only happened 3 times since the past year.
Should I replace the battery again?
Or the starter?
Or the starter relay?
Or what cables need to be checked or replaced?
General opinion so far from some locals is this is a needle in the haystack.

Tony,
Double Check that the Cable Clamps are TIGHT ON THE
BATRY TERMINAL'S.
I've read many post's on the WWW where the Non Nissan
Batry Terminal's were slightly smaller and a Spacer is
needed to take up the Slack so that the Cable Clamp's
are indeed Tight.
Even though this has been a simple procedure in Olden
Day's,, a loose Cable Clamp has been reported to cause
an Arch which Nissan said damaged the ECM $$$$.
If you aren't sure of Your Batry/Electrical Ability to
Diagnose,, I suggest bite the Bullet and take it to
Nissan to let them check it out,, before Risking a
High Dollar Repair. IMO

Do you have the green and red circles on the battery
terminals? They do not allow the clamps to sit down on
the terminals all the way. As previously mentioned,
check the main battery cable @ the starter.

It happened again, so a little over a month or so.
I had just driven the truck an hour on the highway going somewhere.
Shut the truck off.
Came back to the truck an hour later, and it would not start.
Turning the key to the "on" position the volt mater says I have plenty of voltage. All the lights come on and work fine.
When I try to start it, I hear a definately click like its trying to start. (1 click, coming from approx under the car / almost hearing it near the glove box etc. so towards the right side of the underneath assuming near the starter or electronics).
My trick of waiting 15 minutes did not work this time.
I waited overnight, and then it started in the morning.
It was a little "slow" in starting, but then started fine and ran fine.
Now I can shut it off and start it again and again and it works fine.
My battery is less than a year old, I could replace it for free.
The connections are clean and tight.
Overall, all power seems very strong and is related to just starting, and only after 6 weeks did it happen. I run the truck every day fine otherwise.
I checked the cables.
Wondering if I should get a new starter.
Are you still thinking connection?
Thoughts?

Tony,
Solenoid, is what I'm thinking now.
But if it were me, I would take it to Nissan and let
them check it out. Might be something else, but a
Click Sound is a primary symptom of a bad Solenoid.
The Solinoid is integrated with the Starter I think,,
but I would get it checked out before thowing part's
at it.
Might be a good Idea before takeing it to Nissan to
get the OE Part # for the Nissan Starter and check the
price on EBay, Amazon, & Beelineparts.com. I alway's
try to stay OE if possible and many time's can find OE
Part's on the site's I mentioned much lower than at
the Dealer.
