While looking for a failed wheel bearing I noticed what I think is excessive play in the rear differential. Over the years I have had some success tightening these in other vehicles so long as it wasn't the teeth themselves that were worn.
I found a few related posts but nothing that directly addressed it. Doesn't mean there aren't any, just that my poor search skills failed to find any.
Does anyone here have any experience with this?

I believe the rear differential in the some of the 2007-
08 Frontiers were known as Dana D-44a
I tried a Google search “Set gear lash D-44a rear
differential” and it had a lot of tech info.
Normally this is done on the bench by techs with
experience
I had a D44a in a 1999 Grand Cherokee and it wasn‘t as
good by far as the D-44 in my 1976 Wagoneer…
Personally I don’t believe the Aluminum D-44s are as good
as
the rear end in the older Frontier 4x4s like my 1999
model.

The gears have already set a "WEAR" pattern from use, if
you attempt to mess with the backlash, you may end up with
an unwanted noise(whine). If it isn't giving any concerns,
I wouldn't worry about it. Under normal wear, there is
usually quite a bit of backlash in those rears.
