Ok now a new question about my 2002 Frontier 4x4.

A couple months ago I had to put the truck in 4 wheel drive.  She did not take it well.  It was harder then hell to get it to shift to 4 wheel high and when it did it made like a metalic popping noise.  Once it did this it was in 4 wheel drive.  Then when I wanted to go back to 2 wheel it did the same thing.   It wasn't as bad when I did it back and forth a couple times but then the next day I went out and tried again it did the same thing.  Now I'm scared to ever put the thing in 4 wheel high for it may not easily go back to 2 wheel.

Any maintenence suggestions on a problem like this.  I thought it may need lubricated but thought I would see if anyone else has had this kind of problem.

Because it is an electronic 4x4, the transfer case will only shift when the computer tells it it is OK.  Do you have a manual, or an automatic?  I know with mine, it shifts alot easier if you let the clutch out while the trans is in neutral.  Try either putting it in neutral, or rolling slowly while in neutral, that might help.

It's an automatic.  But I will try it in neutral.  I followed the owners manual on how they recommend shifting into 4 wheel.  It says you can do it in drive on the go up to 35 mph I believe.  Thanks for the suggestion, I will try it tomorrow just to see if that helps any.

Is there any regular maintenence that should be done on the 4 wheel drive?

well, if you want to be thourough, i would change the oil in the transfer case every 60K miles, even if you dont go into 4x4.  A good quality full synthetic goes along ways twoards good shifting.  Other than that, nothing i can think of.

I'll look into that as well since my truck is at about 53,000 miles.  Know of any links to guides on doing it on a Frontier.  I will prob. just run out and get a Chilton's sometime soon.

is it a stickshift type 4x4 mechanism?  or is it an electronic pushbutton?

i have the 2000 v6 4x4 5speed.  I shift into 4x4 in NEUTRAL with the clutch engaged.. i dont know why, i just thougth it'd be the safest way.   the safest way is to park and then do it, in neutral probably.

as far as the "shift on the fly" thing goes.   if you want to do that.  i'd suggest pulling over first...engaging the 4x4 and then going.  then when you're driving you can take it out....or put it back in....once you've initially engaged it that first time, it will be easier to shift in and out untill you roll the truck backwards like six feet.

i dont remember why that is.

mine will make a nice CLUNK sometimes if i try to engage when rolling....i just dont like that, so i do it parked now.  it has been like that since i test drove it when it was new.

even after they replaced my front hubs once.

i think they all do it.

Yeah mines the stickshift type with an automatic tranny.  Wish it were the electronic pushbutton.  I have a 2000 Chevy S-10 as well that has the electronic push button and it works really well and no fuss.

In my Nissan I am going to try putting it in neutral then trying the 4 wheel drive.  I know they make a klunk but the way mine was sounding I thought the truck was going to break.
