I have a 2000 Frontier XE Kingcab and I am experiencing trouble with the electrical system & engine.  It started around 2008 with a flickering door light.  It progressed to the instrument panel cutting out (guages going to 0), along with the cruise control (if it was on).  Now the engine will cut out and/or runs rough.  This tends to happen on hills.

I have had it to the dealer for checks but they cannot find anything wrong by checking computer codes.  I also have not been able to bring it to them when it is in this state.

I believe others are having this same problem but I need to be able to communicate the problem to the dealer & get this fixed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Mike

I believe there was a thread awhile back on the instrument
clusters having problems.

Yes - I saw some threads related to that but it's more than just the cluster in my case, my whole engine starts coughing & the power dies.  I have to pull over, turn the truck off and start it again to correct.  Also, the dash will come back on & off and my cruise will die.

Sorry but I just joined this forum, but what was the resolution of the cluster problem?  Can the dealer fix it?

Thanks.

Mike

Does the engine cut out all the time or only when the cluster is dead?

The engine only cuts out or loses power when the cluster is dead.  However, it seems to happen on hills more than flat areas.

As I mentioned, sometimes the cluster will come back on.  The open door red-light always starts flashing on/off as well.

I presume you have an automatic transmission. When the cluster works it processes the speedometer signal for the computer and this gives the transmission its "shift points". If the cluster is dead there is no signal for the computer so there would be no shifting and thus performance/stalling issues.

We can repair the cluster. Visit Mr. Whizard Technical Services for more info

Yes - I have an automatic transmission.  Let me clarify - when the cluster stops working, the engine does NOT always die.  In fact, I can often drive the truck and it runs OK.  As I mentioned, sometimes the cluster willl start working again.  The problem with the cluster is always preceeded by the blinking of the open door light on the dasboard which makes me suspect the electrical system, not the computer.  The stalling pretty much only happens on hills.

I'd love for you the fix the cluster but I am not a mechanic and therefore I don't know how I would remove the cluster to get it to you.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Mike
