I own a '00 Frontier, 60k, V6 and a K&N High Performance intake installed.  I recently reoiled the filter and my mileage took a dump. From 20-21 to about 15mpg.  I reoiled the filter with less oil but no improvement. I had the injectors cleaned. Mileage still in the dumper. What did I do wrong? Someone suggested I contaminated the Mass Air Sensor. Any suggestions from any of you out there?

Cleaning the MAF is easy - Go to Radio Shack or some other electronics store and buy electrical terminal cleaner spray (non lubricated) and hose off the wires, inside the MAF, with it.

You can also use carb spray if you can't find the terminal cleaner.

If that does not clear up your issue you may have an O2 sensor that is going bad.

Napa carries a MAF specific cleaner.  I would recommend that in place of a Carb spray as that will damage the sensor.

Tell me exactly how the carb spray will hurt the MAF, please be specific.

The chemical composition of Carb spray is 2 ingredients more than your can of Brakleen.  Both will eat the finish and the sensing element on the MAF Sensor, causing a false reading to your ECU.

Plus, the can of MAF cleaner is the same price as a can of Brakleen, so they're not trying to take your money.  Here's a good article on it.

Thank you for the link.

It looks like the CRC MAF cleaner is electrical terminal cleaner repackaged and remarketed, which is brilliant.

I checked with my local Napa, the price is $1 more than the Electrical terminal cleaner, but the can is bigger.  So it doesn't really matter which one you get.  I need to pick up a can though, my Max is running bad, and that's the only thing I haven't done to it yet.

Thank you for the replies erveryone.  Now it's stupid question time.  Where is the sensor located?  Is this the sensor that plugs into the K&N filter itself, or is it further up the air intake tube prior to the throttle body?  And I also take it that the O2 sensor is either on the exhaust manifold or prior to the catalitic converter?

The MAF is right behind the filter, it'll look SIMILAR to this (this pic is from a 90 Maxima)

As for 02, I believe it is right before the CAT.  Some systems have 2 or more, usually found before and after the CAT.

Well folks. As promised, I'd keep you all up to date on my progress in solving this problem.  I cleaned the Mass FLow Sensor using the CRC cleaner as recommended by some of you, ran a couple of tank fulls and ........  NO CHANGE!  Still getting lousy mpg.  Next is either new plugs or replace the K&N with a new one. Heck, it's only about $60 for a new one. My troubleshooting skills tell me to start where the trouble began, the K&N.  Anyone disagree!!
