1998 4WD Frontier SE.  Fantastic rig, almost all stock.  133K miles.  lately, the digital odometer has been reading weird-  double miles, trip only, 999,999, etc.  And when it does, the tach will double the RPM, the speedo will half the MPH.  Or the temp guage and fuel gauge will tweak as well.  Battery is GOOD, cables, connections good.  Truck runs like new except for this intermittent problem.  Anyone?

After reading in a different forum from people with the same problem with '98 Frontys, I think I fixed it.  Dave posted " check your electrical connection to the inst. cluster or the grounds for it. "  That sounded better than "you need a new instrument cluster circuit board from the dealership."

So I got under my dash last night with a mini maglite and poked around at all the wiring from the fuse box to the I/P.  Really knocked around the harnesses, then pulled a Fonzie on top of the dash above the gauges, knocked them around.  Problem has not shown up after repeatedly turning the truck on and off, the odometer is reading true and so are the other gauges.  So sounds like a connection somewhere.

You may want to remove the cluster and tighten all the
screws on the printed circuit board.

Just did this thanks.  The screws were tiny and had lock washers but none were very tight.

Common problem with these instrument clusters. We repair these and many other instrument clusters at a very reasonable price. Visit Mr. Whizard Technical Services for more information.
