I've had my '03 Frontier for 2.5 years. Since day 1, I've complained about the cruise control. The dealer looked at it 2-3 times and told me there was nothing wrong with it. They said it is a common complaint and I've lived with it ever since.

Here's what it does. It performs almost adequately at speeds of 60-ish and below. Anything above that, I feel a slight surging feeling as it attempts to maintain speed. It will eventually lose enough speed that it will kick down a gear but it doesn't ever gain speed. It just holds the gear and won't ever upshift. At this point, I cancel it and take over. It annoys the crap out of me and I refuse to think that nothing can be done. Does anyone else have this problem? If so, is there a fix?

Check the vac hose going to the actuator, make sure it is
not cracked, swelled up or restricted in any way. Also
check for too much slack in the cable.

I don't see a vacuum hose going to the actuator. The only thing connected to it is a plug from the loom and the cable that goes to the throttle assembly.

I hate to be a parts changer but I'd almost be willing to buy an actuator and slap it on. It doesn't look complicated. However, before I do, is there any way that there could be some kind of electrical interference or feedback that is messing with the signal coming from the controller?

How much slack is in the cable?

No slack that I can see. It's a pretty ridgid cable. Do you think the cable could be gummed up inside the sleeve resticting movement?

I'm referring to the inner cable not the housing just to
clarify.

Well, it looks like it's all pretty much one in the same. Again, I don't see any slack and it looks like it is as it was from the factory. There's only a couple inches of actual cable exposed. Can I email you a couple pictues to illustrate?

Where the inner cable attaches to the throttle valve is
where you want to check for any slack.

Their is no cable slack. The only play is from stop to stop when the pulley rotates. Here's a picture. I would have done this sooner but I'm used to forums that won't let you upload photos, only link to them.

Nice picture! With the engine running at operating temp.,
ther should be just slight "play" in the cruise cable. From
what I'm seeing, it looks good even though the throttle is
not on it's stop. Could you explain to a PC challenged
person(ME), how to upload photos?
