I have a Nissan Frontier 2000 w/ almost 200,000miles(mostly highway).
When switching out of 4WD I would get a whirring noise from the front
end. At first I would be able to stop it when I came to a short stop
after driving for a couple seconds. I would hear a loud clunk sound and
the noise would be gone gradually it involved more starting and
stopping, driving in reverse, and sometimes the whirring would stop and
then start again. I've taken it to a gas station garage and they have
stopped it. The problem would always start again shortly after leaving
the shop.
Today the I was unable to get the whirring sound to stop no matter what combination I would try.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

sounds like your hubs arent releasing. Kind of strange it comes and goes though. Either hubs or possible wheel bearing. Thats my guess

At 200K it sounds like it is time for some new auto hubs.

Thank you. I think the sound is here to stay. Would it be possible to get them "back on track"?

Yes. Replace them, that will get them "back on track".

Ok Thank you. I thought there might be a way to get the ones I already have working again. I will throw them out and get some new ones.

As far as I know, there are no serviceable parts in them.
It is usually more cost effective to just replace them.
