I recently developed a rattling noise under my valve cover, driver side. You can only hear it when you lightly throttle the engine...this is a supercharged motor but I don't think its coming the the supercharger bearing...any ideas would be great...

Oh yea....I did use auto Rx about 1000 miles ago which is still in the motor...the motor was extremely well maintained and no sludge could be seen looking into the fill tube but I used it anyway..

Thanks for your time

Upon further investigation the noise may very well be from the super charger. Cant tell if its coming from the nose cone or the charger itself....can there be a difference? I mean...are the parts in the supercharger that can go bad and make that noise? Somebody please give some input...

Thanks

Gom out and buy an inexpensive mechanic's stethescope with the long metal probe.  Just touch it to where you think the noise is coming from and you'll know right away if you are correct.  Things are usually under $5 and are an invaluable diagnostic tool to have in the garage.

If you are not using hi-test gas, they will go into a by-
pass mode and create a rattle.

Classification:
ECO4-011
Reference:
NTB04-083
Date:
July 14, 2004
2001-2004 FRONTIER AND XTERRA;
SUPERCHARGER NOISE AT IDLE AND LACK OF POWER
APPLIED VEHICLES:
2001 - 2004 Frontier (D22) equipped with supercharger.
2002 - 2004 Xterra (WD22) equipped with supercharger.
IF YOU CONFIRM:

^     The supercharger makes a rattle/grinding type
noise at Idle, and
^     The engine has reduced power while driving.
ACTION:

a.     Review the supercharger information in this
bulletin.
b.     If your incident is not caused by "park knock" as
described in this bulletin:
^     Go to ASIST for further diagnostic information
NOTE :DO NOT REPLACE THE SUPERCHARGER FOR A SPARK KNOCK
INCIDENT.
SUPERCHARGER INFORMATION

Premium fuel is required

^     The Supercharged (VG33) V-6 engine used in the
2001-2004 D22 Frontier and the 2002-2004 WD22 Xterra
requires Premium Fuel.
^     If premium fuel is not used, the engine may
experience "park knock" during acceleration or under
heavy loads.
^     If spark knock is detected by the "knock sensor",
the ECM will put the supercharger into bypass (fail-safe)
mode.
^     The supercharger will make a rattle/grinding type
noise at idle when it is in "fail safe".
^     Also, the engine will have reduced power if
driven in "fail safe".
Supercharger Bypass Valve

^     The bypass valve limits boost pressure from the
supercharger when the system is in fail-safe.

^     In fail-safe, the internal bypass valve will
remain mostly closed (see Figure 1).
^     After the key is turned OFF the ECM will reset
and restore the boost solenoid function.
The bypass valve will function normally, and the
rattle/grinding type noise will be eliminated.

Hey thanks for the reply....I always use 92 octane or better in my cars unless they specifically call for lower octane. The mechanics that I know say its just better for your cars to run on higher octane anyway.

I will take the info you posted into consideration but the noise does not happen at an idle. It is only noticeable at between 1800 & 2300 rpm and at initial start up when cold.  I will check the by pass valve but I dont think its in by pass mode. The boost seems fine and you can hear the supercharger wind up as usually.

I'm going to bring in by my mechanics house tonight and see what we find...I'll update this post...thanks again.
