Hey guys, new to the site, so first off here is a hello to you all. I am a member of many different forums, and i just stumbled across this one while googling frontier problems. so here goes....
In our shop we have a 2005 frontier 4.0 4x4, manual shift. It came in the shop with just the CEL on. Scanned and revealed p0300 random cyl misfire. It felt like it had a dead miss, which i could not pinpoint with our MODIS, so i decided to start with plugs. Upon removal, the left bank 3 plugs were alot worse than the right bank, quite black, looked like it was running rich. Finished the job and took it out, it idled smoother, but now had a ridiculous lack of power. I went straight to the cats and found both fronts had failed, but only the left cat was bad enough that it was COMPLETELY disintegrated, and had piled up against the 2/1 o2 sensor. popped the cats out for a quick diagnosis, and all the power was back, but i noticed alot of bluish white smoke out of the exhaust. I chalked it up to the cats being out of the vehicle as it was running great and we ordered 4 cats for the vehicle. Once we put them in, it ran great, but everytime we run it, it seems to smoke a little harder, until it now smokes SO BAD, that it would clear an entire street, almost like the gnarliest burnout you have ever seen. Again the left bank plugs are BLACK, and covered in oil where the right bank is fairly clean. These plugs have been in the truck for maybe a week and already totally oil fouled, but only on the left 3 cylinders. when i pop the plugs out to look at the cylinders, there are PUDDLES of oil on those 3 pistons, but not on the right side pistons, however there is some wetness on the right bank. PCV valve has been replaced, and even bypassed to see if it was mad blowby. I just cant figure out what is going to cause just one bank to burn stupid amounts of oil. After it warms up for a bit it clears up, but if you give it one or 2 shots with the throttle, it smokes like crazy again. I am at a loss, because this thing just keeps getting worse and worse, and i feel like an idiot, because it came in with the basic complaint of a CEL on, now with over $3g into this thing, i cant give it back. I'm gonna go in on my day off here and do some tinkering, i have already done a compression test which came back at 170-190, but i think leak down is next unless possibly you guys have maybe got any other ideas. My scope camera has been away at SNAPON for warranty (3 months so far), so i cant really get a good look into the cyls to see the walls etc.
P.S. intake collector was replaced at the same time due to some rattling, and the collector was just oil soaked like crazy
Thew worst part is, now that it has some power i noticed the clutch is slipping pretty bad. Wouldn't have tackled the job at all if i had known that first. Not too good for 40,000 miles.
Thanks guys for any replies/ideas, if i get this figured out today, ill let y'all know what it was/is

Ok so heres a quick update, did a leakdown, and cylinders 2,4,and 6 are all about 75%, coming through the oil cap, cylinders 1,3,and 5 are fine at around 13-14%. I have no idea why all those 3 cylinders are so bad, but i am hoping a soak overnight in some decarbonizer will help free up some rings, if not i guess its overhaul time!

SO how often did the owner change his oil? If it is carboned up that bad, he may have only changed it ONCE! The rings are really stuck, it sounds like, and the blowby destroyed the cats.

#1 the cats are warranted for 8yrs/80K miles.
#2 When the cats go bad(disintegrate) material is sucked
into the engine due to overlap, which scores the cyls and
rings. Thus the oil consumption. I think I would have him
take it to his dealer.

Well guys here is the latest, frontierguy you are bang on the money, after taking a closer look at how much substrate was left of the left cat, it is feasible to say that about 50 - 75% was unaccounted for, meaning it had to go somewhere. I guess lack of EGR means greater overlap, which is a major bummer for this guy. He was a very understanding customer and is most likely going to take it to a dealer, however he is far from the first owner of the vehicle, so i dont know what can be done there. Thanks for the replies guys, appreciate the help!

Does not have to be the original owner.
