First I'm new--just purchased a 2010 SE 4x4 king in July with the sole purpose of surf fishing; therefor riding on the beach. Wednesday the Service Engine Soon light came on while on the beach (2,681 miles). Immediately took it to the dealer--they said it is caused by the wheels slipping while in 4wd low while in sand. WT%! Can this be right?

Yes. Dumb question, but why would you expose a brand new vehicle to salt water? Up here in the northeast the road crews apply salt to the roads all winter which is brutal on our vehicles.

nah, ur on a good forum. Frontierguy probably just hates to see brand new vehicles get exposed to corrosive stuff, like salt water. Lots of exposure could cause a bunch of rust in the long run. Take it to the carwash when you get back from the beach and it should keep you from rusting out too soon.
As far as the light goes, I would see if it will go off after driving a while on pavement (where the wheels aren't slipping). If it does, then I wouldn't worry about the light because you know its coming on because of the sand. If it stays on, maybe the dealer can do something like reprogram it or something. idk.

Yes. +! on salt water rust. Wash the truck underneath THOROUGHLY after being in salt water and also spray the entire upper body. Salt water will find every little bit of exposed metal and you won't believe how fast it can corrode! All the years I fished in salt water with my outboard powered boat, I flushed the engine withing 1 hour of taking it out of the ocean to keep the internals corrosion-free. And it worked. If the rust gets going, the value of your truck will drop like a stone.
Good luck with the blues and sea trout!

I didn't say that, I just can't justify taking a brand new or any vehicle for that matter and exposing it to such extreme conditions. I work very hard for a living and don't want to destroy what I have worked hard to achieve. Sorry.

You shouldn't have to be in 4 low while driving on the beach. 4 high is fine. Drop your tire pressure down to 20 psi, and turn off the stabilization control.
I've never had vehicle rust from driving on the beach. F-150, Ranger, Tacoma, Xterra, and now Frontier - never a problem. Factory corrosion protection is pretty good these days, and it's not like you are sitting there submerged in salt water.

So this started as a simple question and all you got is what seems like a lecture. I agree with your question. You never said you were driving in salt water either. I got a 2010 Equator with 32 miles on it on 31 Dec. I traded in my 04 2500 HD with 9" lift.
THE FIRST PLACE I WENT WAS TO THE BEACH! I even went to some awesome wheelin spots AND GOT STUCK "SO WHAT" I wasn't stomping the gas as the motor was not broken in. I have been to the beach ALMOST EVERY DAY since.
When I got back from the wheelin trip onto the asphalt my truck did the same thing and since I was in 4 LOW it took me a little while to figure out how to get back to 2wd. After driving in a straight line for like 10 miles the light went off.
Thanks! William
