I was looking for some advice or experience anyone may have on changing out manual transmission fluid for aftermarket or just a refill of factory fluid in pursuit of better shift quality. I recently changed out the factory fluid in my 2009 6 speed 4x4 with a 50:50 mix of redline mtl and mt-90 but this did not really have any affect on shift quality. I have heard on some forums that frontiers and other Nissan 6 speeds seem to perform best on the Nissan HQ 75W85 fluid (the claim is that the difference is significant compared to the factory fill and that they must be different). I’m thinking this is another waste of 70 bucks and a couple hours. My main complaints are cold shift-ability (it’s a word right) when up-shifting from first to second and an overall notchy feel like the synchronizers are reacting too slow (or something like that). Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Same with my 08- I changed the fluid at 3K miles with the Nissan recommended synthetic fluid. Adjusting some of the free-play out of the clutch helps, also don't be lazy(as I am) and be sure to get the clutch completely down to the floor when shifting. It also likes to be shifted quickly as opposed to a slow shift, which doesn't make any sense! Coming from a '96 Tacoma w/ 156K and the original clutch that shifted smooth as silk, took awhile getting used to the Nissan.

I put Royal Purple in my 04's 5speed. It shifts a lot
smoother as far as I can tell. I don't have any more
difficulty shifting when its cold. The only time I have a noticeable difference is when its about 30degrees outside
and I start off without letting anything warm up...which I
don't do often.

That is COLD for Baton Rouge!! Up here that is just a cool fall evening. Curious...what weight and brand oil do you run in that hot, humid climate? I run Mobil 1 5W30 or 0W-30 (winter) and change every 6 months. 5W-30 late March through late September, 0W30 late September through late March.

lol yes, 30 is cold for BR. I pretty much use Royal Purple
5w-30 year round and I change every 7500miles with a mobil
1 filter. Whenever its below 40, I let my truck warm up for
about 5-6 minutes before driving.
