I just bought a 2006 Frontier crew cab 4x4 about 2-3 weeks ago. When driving at 62mph or higher there seems to be a rumbling noise (annoying). but when speed drops below 60 it is very quiet and no noise is heard. I checked the differential fluid and it is full. The truck has 99,500 miles on it. Any ideas??

Check the u-joints, they may not be loose, but rusted and binding.< id="gwProxy" ="">< ="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" ="">

Today I removed the drive shaft and checked both u-joints and they seem to be working smoothly with no binding or sticking. Another thing I noticed was that the vent cap on the rear axle was not able to be turned and seemed gunked up. When I removed it to clean it as I was backing it out it released alot of air like the sound of a 2 liter bottle of soda when opened. I cleaned it with carburetor cleaner and reinstalled it. Seems to have helped the rumble slightly. Any other suggestions. Thanks!!

That is very typical of the vent depending on your local. Wheel bearing - tire- ????< id="gwProxy" ="">< ="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" ="">

Thanks Frontier Guy

Could be the tire(s)I also noticed that the front tires are brand new and the back ones are the same make and model, size etc. but it appears that they were on the front a short time ago and the rear tires were probably shot so they put new ones on the front and the better front tires they moved to the rear. Maybe that is where the noise is coming from? They dont appear to be choppy but the sides are worn slightly. Not sure if the rotation was reversed.

Today I had 2 brand new tires identical to the front tires installed. (I wanted all 4 new ones anyway). This did not help the noise at all. Also I just noticed another sound that maybe related to this annoying rumble/vibration noise? When slowing down at 15 mph or lower i hear a slight ticking noise that seems to slow down as the speed decreases. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I will let you know when I find out what is wrong. These kind off thinks drive me crazy. I won't be satisfied till I find the problem. I also hope its nothing serious but I will continue to drive it till I find it or something breaks then I can fix it. Mine does not go away at any speed above 62 but never had it past 80. Let me know if you find anything stormgrey4x4.

06 CC 4 x 4 SE...same problem, same speed.......54000 miles - started about 4 months ago.  Tire shop seemed to think my rear tires might be seperating as they could not balance them but since they still have 50% tread on them I am not going to replace them until next winter.... when it dries out I am going to jack up the rear end and inspect the U-joints.  Rear diff fluid has been changed.
