I have a 2000 Frontier 4x4. The manual says that the 4wd light indicates the position of the transfer case shift lever. In other 4wd trucks that I've owned, the 4wd light also indicates when the wheel hubs unlock when shifting back to 2wd. My light sometimes stays on for a few seconds after shifting back to 2wd, so I'm wondering whether this is also true on the Frontier. The manual also says that will not unlock until it's driven in reverse a few feet. The light always goes out within a few seconds when going forward.

If it goes out you are golden, most cases the vehicle does need to be driven in rev to disengage.
