Good morning all,

I have a 2004 Nissan frontier with a non-turbo 3.3l 6cyl engine. For a while now I have noticed a tapping noise that ONLY happens when I press the accelerator. When I take my foot off the accelerator, the tapping immediately stops.

The tapping becomes faster at higher rpms, but as soon as I remove my foot from the pedal, the sound stops.

The problem is more noticeable in cold weather and typically goes away after the car has warmed up.

I have popped the hood and it seems like it is coming somewhere around the drivers side.. near the throttle body but I can't identify what it could be.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Hi everyone,

New to the Frontier forum.  I have the same problem, only mine is a 2005 6cyl.  Any way to check for a cracked exhaust manifold?  If this is the problem, what does it take to  repair the problem?

Thanks!!

remove the shield to inspect, if cracked , replace. If the three way cat is part of the manifold, they are warranted for 8yrs/80K miles. check with your dealer. Also check the ex man studs for loose/missing/cracked.

It is not the exhaust manifolds. I have identified the clicking is coming from the "EVAP Canister Purge Volume Control Solenoid Valve"

I verified this by revving the engine enough to hear the clicking, then unplugging the two-prong connector going into the solenoid. This immediately made the clicking stop.

So, now I have questions:
-The wire feeding into the solenoid has two connectors, a blue and a black one. Currently the blue one is connected to the solenoid. What is the other one used for? I have an XE VG33E (no turbo)..

-Why is this thing tapping so loudly? Anything I can do to quiet it?

-I see this is related to the condenser.. on occasion I will smell a sweet smell in the cabin, but I do not notice my radiator fluid level dropping.. is this valve and that smell related?

Thank you all for your responses.. I'm slowly figuring this out :D

Replacing the valve should quiet things down a bit. It is possible you have some slight coolant seepage causing the sweet smell. Check the wax pellet assy on the drivers side upper intke just behind the throttle assy., check the intake , head gaskets, etc.
