Hello, i need some help or advice...i have a 2004 Frontier 4 cil standar and the ac stoped working, it does not put out cold air ....but the hot air works...i do not know if that is normal when ac goes bad, i took it to a shop to get it checked and they told me the pressures are both (low and high) in normal ranges, the cutch kicks in when ac is turned on but does not dissengage when turned of.....my question is if this may only be a matter of replacing the clutch for a new one or maybe just replacing bearings or seals wherever it has on...(i do not know if there is a rebuilt kit for it)....could this be just a clutch pproblem or it may be the whole compressor?.......the numbers on the estimate are a little high for what i was considering,,,,if i have no choice i guess i will have to pay .....but i would like to find out if this is something i could do myself.......... i looked at a webbpage where an ac compressor was taken apart and showed how to replace the seals and put back together....it did not seem hard ....but first i like to know if the problem in my ac is just the clucth....or may be the whole thing....if anyone can help me out with this i would appreciate it...

thanks for taking the time to read ....

Hope this will be of some help.

Automotive Air Conditioner 101

The components of an automotive air-conditioner are:

Electro Magnetic Clutch is belt driven that causes the

Compressor Pump to draw low pressure (gas) refrigerant from the

Suction Hose that has a

Dryer and a

Sight glass in the line. The pressurized refrigerant is pumped into a

Pressure Hose into the

Condenser Core to be cooled and then into another

Pressure Hose that delivers the refrigerant to the

Expansion Valve spraying the liquid refrigerant into the,

Evaporator Core for cooling and controlled by the,

Thermal Coupler and

Dash Temperature Control that directly controls the Electro Magnetic Clutch.

The process of compressing the refrigerant creates additional heat in it much above the ambient temperature even though it may still be cold in the suction hose. High pressure in the condenser attempts to lower the refrigerant temperature to the ambient temperature of the air passing through the core. The refrigerant is then delivered to the Expansion Valve that is at the entrants to the Evaporator Core in the cab. The refrigerant is under positive pressure entering the Expansion Valve and becomes a negative pressure as it exits the valve. The large drop in pressure as the refrigerant enters the Evaporator causes a large drop in temperature inside the Evaporator Core. The drop in pressure is caused by the compressor sucking the refrigerant from the Expansion Valve. A blower sends warm air over the Evaporator Core where the heat is extracted into the refrigerant and the cooled air is distributed into ductwork.

Hope I didn’t leave anything out!

I only know about Electro Magnetic A/C Clutches. When the electrical currant is removed drive pieces are retracted by springs. If the springs break the drive pieces can still drive the clutch.

ok so what you are saying is that i should check to see if the springs may be broken and are not retracting the clutch and this is also impeding the sistem to send a signal to the valve that alows the freon to circulate?.....

again thanks for the hint...

please confirm....

..

The Thermal Coupler only turns the compressor on and off. I'm guessing the clutches are the same on the 4 & 6 engines.

Have not seen manuals on the clutch but I'll look a little later (got honey-do's). Heres a PIX of my V-6:
