Hey everyone!

I recently bought a '98 XE 4x4.  The check engine light was on, so I had the computer checked at AutoZone.  The computer read a failing EGR system.  After doing some diagnostic with a vacuum pump and a multimeter, I find that both the solenoid and the temperature sensor have failed.  Where I live, there is no emissions check, so I want to just block off the EGR system right now and save the money.  My plan is to replace the temperature sensor with a resistor, then find a new solenoid at a junkyard (since the EVAP vacuum shares this as well).  I plan to get a wiring connector from a junkyard too so I'm not butchering my own wiring when I put in the resistors.

What resistor do I need to block off my EGR and make the ECU happy (no check engine light), and is there anything else I need to be aware of?

Okay, I found the answer to my own problem.  On the AutoZone website I found a chart listing resistances for certain temperatures, unfortunately I am having an error uploading the image.

At 32 degrees (F) the resistance should be .62 - 1.05 M ohm

at 122 degrees the resistance should be .065 - .094 M ohm

at 212 degrees the resistance should be .011 - .015 M ohm

On a different forum, someone with an S14 used a 100 K ohm resistor and blocked off the EGR, which tricks the computer into thinking the intake temperature is just under the 122 degree mark, so I think I will try this.

If anyone is interested in doing to same (it should increase fuel mileage and power a little), I will post pictures and results when I am finished.

Hey everyone!

Well, after moving, starting classes, and other delays, I finally got around to completing this little project.

It takes about 30 min, an extra wiring connector from a junkyard ($2), and a 100K ohm resistor (5-pack for 99 cents).  I cut the wires short on the extra connector and soldered in the resistor.  Then all I had to do was unplug the temperature sensor and plug in the resistor plug.  Finally, I just disconnected the vacuum hose to the EGR valve.

The EGR robs your engine of power and a little gas mileage, so even if you don't need to make a repair, this is a modification you may want to make.  Especially if you get an extra plug from a junkyard, you do not modify any wiring directly.  With a quick change of plugs and replacing the vacuum line, you can set everything back to normal (for emissions tests).

This also tricks the OBD system, so you do not get a check engine light, and if your emissions test just checks the OBD, you will still pass.  Disabling the EGR will cause you to fail emissions if they put a "sniffer" on your exaust (you will get high NOx emmssions).

Thanks Bro...

In the DFW Texas area they don't sniff late models. They plug the trucks computer to a state computer. My '99 V-6 has always passed every year and the the state loves the $400.00 it cost me!

Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..

Friends get ready for this…

In the future all individuals will have to buy carbon credits. These carbon credits will be in the Commodities Futures Market and speculators will be driving the price up to $4.00 per credit!!!

Hmm, bad news.  After driving a few hundred miles, the check engine light came back on.  I guess it will need to be a different resistor.  I will go to AutoZone and get the codes read, it should tell me if the resistance is too high or too low.

I will keep trying different resistors until I get it right, then I will post again.  Thanks for your patience everyone!
