Little bit about the car

2002 4 cyl
178 k on the clock

Ill start off with what I have done to the car since I have gotten it

fixed a exhaust leak (had a cat stolen off it apparently - previous owner tried to fix exhaust leak by clamping on flex pipe)
replaced a 02 sensor (was cut off when cat was stolen - 02 sensor was spliced in)
new air filter
new spark plugs/wires
new distributor cap
tranny fluid flush

The car was running fine untill about 2 days ago when my brother took it out, he stomped on it leaving the neighbor hood (didnt say how hard or anything) it stalled... he was able to start it again and drive it home, and now it makes the noise you see in the video. It still idles/revs very smoothly...

For what its worth, it seems to be alot louder now then it was before (despite the knocking noise - just the engine idleing is much louder IMO)....

my brother just installed a relatively powerful stereo system in the car... apparently alternators can make some nasty sounds too but I don't know.

I think that about covers it, if you need anymore information to make an accurate guess please ask... I appreciate any input.

Hmm... wow that's a tricky one.  My best guess is the piston slapping the valve, I.E. a valve return spring is broken.  If you reving the engine fast enough you'll get what is called valve floatation.  That's when the valves are going so fast that the springs don't actually pull them back closed before the cam lobe comes back around.  That's usually when the piston hits the valve still sitting open and destorys everything.  At best it bends the valve allowing you to limp off the road.  It's definitley something you want fixed ASAP as whatever is wrong will get worse and could possibly end up sticking out of your motor.

An alternator won't make that kind of noise, whining and smoke yeah, but not a knocking sound even if it did have a bad bearing.

There is a neat little tool that can help.  It's like a doctor's stethoscope, but with a needle point instead of a flat disc.  We use this to detect exactly what area a noise is coming from inside the motor. It pinpoints an area really well.  Easy to use as the location with the loudest noise generaly gives you what is wrong.  High up on the valve cover means the valve train, near the oil pan is usually a crankshaft bearing.  Usually a parts store will have one hand.

Have you pulled the valve cover and looked at the timing chain guides??? sounds like one is floating around in there with the hood up. The video from outside the vehicle sounds like bottom end problems-rod bearing etc. I would pull the valve cover and have a look.
