Hello folks. I am gearing up (no pun intended) to change the rear differential fluid in my 07 SE 4x4 CC and noticed the drain and fill plugs require hex bits for removal. I measured them with a ruler and it looks like the fill plug is a 9/16 (or 15 mm) and the drain plug is a 3/8 (or 10 mm) hex bit. Could anyone confirm the size of hex bits that I need to purchase and whether they are metric or standard? Those bad boys are expensive and I don't want to buy them until I know for sure what sizes are required. Thanks.

The fill plug is 14 mm.  I just bought the 14 mm wrench from Napa for $7 and used it a few days ago. I forget the size of the drain as I had a whole series and looked til I found one that fit.  I applied Teflon tape to the drain plug screws and used silicone on the fill plug to prevent leakage.

Thanks Boomer. Did you buy a new gasket for the drain plug? The service manual says not to reuse the gasket.

All I found on the bolt was a large thick washer.  Did not look like a "gasket" that is used on the oil drain plug.  I did put teflon tape on the threads of the drain bolt.  That alone should prevent any leakage and not hurt anything.  Its easy to remove next time as well so you can apply fresh.  I did use Mobil 1 75W-90 which is a full synthetic fluid as recommended in my owners manual but I always use full synthetic oils and fluids in my vehicles.

I am an AMSOIL man myself. I will also be using the 75W-90. Have you changed out the fluid in the front differential and transfer case yet? That is what I'll be doing next.

No, I have not done that as yet and will probably let that go until spring.  The wear and tear up front is less than in the rear.  But I'll use syn fluids where possible.  I have not checked but is ATF called for in the transfer case?  If so, do they call out Nissan D?  Is there a full synthetic equivalent to Nissan D?

The transfer case does call for Nissan Matic D (2 Liters) or equivalent. AMSOIL sells an ATF that is graded for use where Nissan Matic D is called for:

It also has a gasket that the service manual says not to reuse. However, seeing as our trucks are new and the gasket hasn't had much time to degrade, it probably is alright to reuse it.
