After a week or so of driving my new King Cab it seemed like more people were passing me than I used to notice, so the next day I brought my GPS with me and checked my speed on the way to work.  I've done this with other cars and also checked it against Interstate mile markers and I think my GPS is accurate.  Well my truck when indicating 74 mph is only going 70 mph.  My other cars have checked at 0.5 and 2 mph errors.  Even though its on the "safe side" 4 mph seems like a little too much.  I have General Grabber AW P235/75R15 tires that came on it.  It seems like if tire size was the problem, that the only way to correct it would be to have larger diameter tires, so that doesn't sound likely.  Has anyone else noticed a speedometer error, or have a way to check theirs and let me know if its just me or not?  If you don't have a GPS another way to check it is to drive a section of interstate that has milemarkers, then hold your speed steady for a couple of miles and time it.  Divide the miles by minutes, then multiplying by 60 to get mph.  Anyone else's observations are welcome.  Other than this, so far I LOVE MY TRUCK!

BillNite;

Welcome to the group!

Tire size/speed CALCULATOR

http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infoTireMath.dos

Technically speaking… if one is going to do some calculations…

The odometer/speedometer is effected by the rolling radius of the tireI.e. the distance between the road and the axle. A 30 inch tire with a 1,000 pound load will have a static radius of less than 15 inches between the axle and the road. The distance a tire will travel per revolution with, say, 1,000 pound loading will be less than the measurement around the UNLOADED tire.

Raising the tire pressure will reduce the speed indicated by the speedometer.

Lowering the air pressure in a rear (front for FWD vehicles) tires will cause the odometer to record more miles.

The generic factory and tire manufactures pressure recommendations do not take into account the many variables in actual vehicle usage. And then most of us change tire sizes and it all goes out the window.

The best tire pressure to run is very complex subject.

Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..

It would be nice if our members would add their vehicle information to their signature (similar to mine) plus add their City and State . A member in the same town might be willing to drop by and help you with a problem. Or drink all your beer!
