2006 Nissan Frontier Extended Cab 4.0L Manual Trans. 23.8K miles

Starting a few months back - I notice when using the fan (when on any position, A/C, internal vent, external vent, hot, cold etc) I hear a gas discharge every 15 seconds from the engine compartment along with a alight pulse detected on the accelerator. I noticed it first only when the AC was on but now have detceted it on any fan setting.

The more urgent, maybe related, maybe not, question is regarding a clunking of the engine leading to near-stall conditions (shaking chassis, no acceleration) when the engine is sped up to 2200RPM. This occurs in Neutral and any gear. Seems to have a little problem starting up but drives fine if I shift under 2200RPM. Im taking into the shop tomorrow but would like to know if anyone knows what is going on. thanks.
