Noticed a leak on my 2001 SC CC 2 wheel drive with about 70K on it  from the front left corner ball joint area.  Brought it in to the dealer and they told me it was a steering gearbox leak and the unit should be replaced.  Needless to say this is an expensive unit.  I have two questions, what would cause this to leak and how good are the seal rebuild kits for these?  If I go the rebuild or even remanufacture route would I expect the same thing down the road.  Just some history, about 2 weeks ago I was on vacation and it was very hot outside, and I noticed a rubber burning smell from the underside of the truck.  Any thoughts or insight would be appreciated.

Thanks for the information.  Turns out the dealer gave me a heavily discounted price and they changed it with a brand new unit.  I was just surprised at how fast the unit failed, no real indication that there was any steering issue or uneven wear on the tires.  I was a little peeved at the beginning but my dealership is great.  They service my wifes Altima and the Frontier, I may pay a little more but when I have a problem they take us right away.  Love the forum and it is my most valuable tool.
