not for sure but your clinking noise could be the chain that holds up the spair tire under the bed...could be bouncing a little into the wheel. like i said not 100% on that but just a thought.
as far as a lift w/o a kit, larger tires will get you a little higher, like going with slightly higher profile tires, say instead of like what i have on my truck 255/65-16's, then going with 255/70-16's, will be a slight difference, a cheap way to go also would be to go with cranking torsion bars up front slightly, but this is very limited and realize it will put stress on your front suspention, tho....from everything i've heard, as long as you aren't offroading it shouldn't cause any huge problems, but you will be very limited as in 1-1.5" safely cranking them up and you'll need a realignment after that as well if im not mistake. as far as the rear, you can get an add a leaf from places like www.4x4parts.com or many other places that will tell you that it'll give like a 2 in lift, basically it's a partial spring that goes added into the leafpack already on your truck. ...i'd check into possible mechanical repercussions prior to doing these, maybe some of the more experienced people in here with lifts can tell you more about those aspects of a lift w/o a lift kit, i can say all in all tho you will be very limited as i said before 1-2" max really w/o a kit, tho a body lift is another way to go and can offer 2-3" lift but some drawbacks are that possible bodyroll becomes exaggerated after time i've heard...hope that is a little information and as i said someone else can probably give you some more specifics
