I have a '06 Frontier that did not come with the factory hitch and 7 pin wiring. The deal I had with the dealer was they were suppose to match the factory option. What I ended up with was 3 wires going to the 7 pin connector from what looks like a standard harness connector (5 wires going into the connector) and one wire tapped off of what I think is the license plate light going to the 7 pin? Does anybody know what the factory trailer hitch package would like?

I was assuming I should be able to hook a brake controller into the 5 wire connector under the dash and be ready to go if I had a factory package. Is this accurate?

Pappatho:

I had a similar deal with my '06 Crew Cab I just bought but the dealer did not install the 7-pin, just a 4-pin. Then they refused to install my brake controller and a 7-pin because they do not install non-Nissan parts. Well, OK.

So, I took the truck to a professional trailer hitch shop (that's all they do; they had successfully installed a 7-pin and controller on my previous vehicle.)

Ever since, I have had a wierd electrical "phenomenon:" When I turn on the key, everything is OK - specifically, instrument panel gauges "come alive" - BUT once I start the truck, the electronic gauges do a little "dance" BELOW the zero or their start points for a few seconds, then return to normal operation. Oh yeah, SOMETIMES it clears out the (factory installed) trip computer, too.

I took it by the Nissan dealer service folks and they said, not only that, it appeared to them there was a drain on the electrical system, based on the way the truck started - I think without a lot of (electrical) "vigor." They did no tests, just a driveway look-at.

So, I took it back to  the "professional" trailer hitch place, and they rewired the 7-pin BUT I still have the same phenomenon, even though I have removed (unplugged) the controller itself.

Needless to say, I'm not trailering until I get this resolved.

So, my comment to you is BE CAREFUL getting thet 7-pin installed AND if/when you do get it successfully installed, please let me know how/where they hooked it up.

Thanks!

Update:

When I took my Frontier to the dealer for further evaluation, they determined the problem was a weak battery. They replaced it for free (well, the truck wasn't even two eweeks old!) I was skeptical, but so far that seems to have solved the problem. The tech also told me that I really came out ahead because the factory installed batteries only last about two years and the one they installed is a six year one.

when batteries sit too long with out start up they tend to weaken, and weather has an affect on them too.
