thanks for all the help guys...what an insightful and highly charged forum.....

FWIW- we did get both bikes in the back using a 3/4"x4'x8' piece of plywood (notched to fit inside wheel wells) to help distribute the weight across and away from the tailgate which must be left in the open position.

Just saw this, I was asking the same questions a few months ago.  I met with a little more success than you though.  Try doing a search, but overall the general idea was "Sure, it should be no problem" of course, I have the long bed 6' so the tailgate is not in question.

As to the front tire issue, if you use a canyon dancer I don't think you need to worry about it.
