I bought a 01 Frontier Desert Runner a few months ago and recently found this site.  I picked up the Frontier for use as a support/rescue vehicle for my two modified Talon TSi's.  So far I'm very happy with the truck and have no real complaints.  Seems like a well engineered vehicle.  Since I've had it I installed a AEM intake and a Gibson exhaust.  I might do a few audio upgrades as well.  Don't plan on getting too crazy with it, since I already spend too much time working on the Talons.

Anyway, here's a few pics of the truck right after I got it.  Good to be here. Thanks for the space.

I'm in Plano.
Talons were one of the Diamond Star Motor triplets from a short lived Mitsubishi/Chrysler partnership in the late 80's-early 90's.  Jointly designed and sold by Eagle (Talon), Plymouth (Laser) and Mitsubishi (Eclipse) dealers, it's kind of a "Bastard Dodge" if anything else.  I have two turbo TSi's, one AWD and a FWD daily driver.   Great little cars, easily modded and fairly quick.  I figure I can use the Frontier to haul tools, parts and tow the cars if one should break down.

Hey BlueFalcon,
New forum member here, also live in Plano and at one time owned a 1990 TSi AWD. God I miss that car. You're fortunate to still be dealing with them. Do you take them racing? I noticed you used the word 'rescue'.

Hey 4Point0Crew06,
Hmm, another Plano resident.  Cool.
Actually DSM's ruined my life.  I've been messing with them since 98, and I'd probably have a bit more money, free time and sanity if I could stick to having just one.  I don't know why, but I can't resist buying cars that others have given up on and putting them back on the road and modifying them.

The 92 FWD was bought for $400 with a blown motor and is supposed to be my daily driver.  In the 4 months I've had it back on the road it's already got more than a few mods on it from stuff I had lying around or parts I scrounged up for it.  Being addicted to crack would probably be cheaper.

The 90 AWD is my "project" that goes to the track every once in awhile. The last time I took it to the Denton track, I blew the spider gears in my center diff into nice shiny chunks at the starting line.  I drove the car home, but it wasn't happy about it.   If I'd had the truck then, I could have put the car on a trailer and not risked screwing the tranny up any more than it was.

I'll probably go a little nuts with the Frontier too.  I've only had it since Dec 05 and it already has exhaust and an intake on it.  Like I said, it's pretty much a disease with me.

So what happened to your TSi?

Oh...my poor Talon. I bought it on January 31, 1992 at around 7PM and got into a wreck with it at about 9PM. I went to a friend's house and picked her up to take her for a ride in my new hot-rod, and I showed her how fast it would climb a very steep city street known as "thrill hill", which people normally drive DOWN...it literally lifts you out of your seat..well, I drove UP it and some dumb woman coming the other direction didn't see me cresting the hill, was driving in the middle of the road with intentions of turning left...well, she turned left in front of me and I smacked her. $6500 damage to my car..her front bumper crushed my left front fender and then drug all the way down the left side of my car. 1 month later, I got it out of the shop. On July 4th weekend of the same year, I hit a deer on the interstate at 75MPH...$4500 damage. I deciced, despite how much I loved it, it was clearly jinxed and I got rid of it. What an amazing car. Very fast, super grip, and hot looks. Those were my short-lived glory days.

I got the aluminized Gibson for the truck.  The SS version would have been nicer, but not really needed here in Texas.  Overall I'm pretty happy with it.  It definitely changes the way the truck sounds, but isn't obnoxious at all.  Makes it sound like a truck, rather than an overgrown car.  At idle it has a nice burble.  Cruising you can barely hear it, unless you really step on it.  Even at cruise it doesn't drone and has pretty much what you said..a nice mellow growl.  Honestly, my intake is easier to hear than the exhaust at times.  The truck seems to have a bit more pickup from a roll, after the exhaust was installed.  Overall it seems to have made the truck a lot happier at all power levels.  I haven't been driving the truck much since it's not my primary vehicle, so i can't give an exact opinion on mileage.

cool cool..yeah no real need for the SS here in texas..(i'm in Texas as well...south central not far from San Anton)...but it's nice anyway...hey if you have any way to get a sound byte posted of your exhaust that'd be cool...if not it's cool..just wondering cause the crappy sound clips on gibson's site are all muddled to me...but to me i'm either considering that or having someone do a custom job done by a local shop made like the design from custom tube products "dual" exhaust design but with a flowmaster muffler or something, cause even tho it's SS...i have a problem paying 600 bucks for a cat back exhaust ya know...
