2001 Nissan Frontier, 4 wl dr. auto, full package, in good condition, except, it just started with hard to brake, pedal moves down very little, like pushing on a rock, truck does stop, slowly, pads good, rotors good, engine good, all correct. sound of HISSING  or suction down or near foot pedal when pedal is depressed. No vacum hose leaks. Been happening for a few days. Now the engine idle surges up and down on rpm, when in drive and pushing on  brake pedal, stops when foot is taken off brake. Shop is not sure if its a vacum leak in the brake unit or vacum leak in the engins.

I have very little money and work for a living, as many of you do. I cannot afford to guess at this problem, since I must find a way to borrow the money to get the repairs done, and I cannot do the repairs any more at my age of 60.

Please advise with any and all ideas of what it might be, I can check a few things under the hood myself.

Your time and help in this matter will be so greatly appreciated. Email me, if you wish, or just post on this site. My email is captainmagazine@yahoo.com

Thanks to all of you.

I notice a hissing sound, the sound of constant air flow, of vacum or air at the brake pedal area, under the dash. Is this a gasket or something that I can tighten up ?

..

My guess is a leaky gasket or diaphram in the vacuum booster for the brakes.

But check all the hoses for a leak.

Good luck.. Don S,,

Everything you described points towards the brake booster.
A leak there will give you no help when braking, and with
the constant pressing the pedal side seal just cracked open
more. With the now constant vacuum leak the engine doesn't
have the vacuum necessary for other parts of the motor.

And how a shop could miss that screaming signal tells me
you need to find a different mechanic.

A brake booster is around $80, the labor rate is what
kills.
