Has anyone ever heard of/ use/ or seen this technique used? I've
driven manuals for several years and never tried it for fear of
screwing something up. How exactly does it work? And does it safely
reduce wear n tear on your clutch? I've taken my truck and cars out
of gears before without pushing the clutch in after the rpms have
dropped low enough but never put into gear without the clutch. If you
havent seen or heard of it search it on youtube by typing synchros
shifting. Im anxious to hear from you guys about it.

..

My take is…

… In the old days standard transmissions didn’t have synchronizers. So we had to “double clutch” to keep from grinding the gears. The process was to slow the RPM in the tranny so the gear to be engaged would be near the same speed.

… Synchro-shifting is backing off the throttle/power and slightly pressurizing the gear shift toward the next gear. As the RPM drops the gears will change. A friend drove an ’89 Chevy 2500 5 speed stick shift from Amarillo Tx to Antonito Co with out using the clutch. At stop lights he turned the engine off then restarted it in low gear.

… I wouldn’t recommend shifting with out the clutch but a little practice could come in handy… Personally I’ll never buy another stick shift or wear high button shoes.

Good Luck.. Don S..

I've tried it with my truck. Like lakota says, its good
to know because it could come in handy if ever your
clutch or slave cylinder is going out and you need to get
home.

syncro shifting works, but these transmissions actually
have synchronizers that help it shift. Double clutching
is really not needed unless you are racing and have a
racing transmission or a big truck from the 80's.

Rev-matching (where you get the engine to the rpm range
that it will be once you change gear) would be helpful.
It puts less of a shock to the drive train...especially
when down shifting. Thats on youtube too.
