My 08 V6 just turned 30,000, went to dealer and got a GENUINE Air filter. You can acutally smell the oil, even the plastic wrap had oily residue on it.
Smells like machine oil, and the other aftermarket ones are bone dry, I have yet to see one that comes wrapped in plastic. Also about the air filter, any reason why there are "flat" spots on the filter? When I got it from the dealer, it looked like it was at the bottom of the pile and maybe was crushed, but one I took out of my truck has the same indentations. These flat spots, there are three of them the run the length of the element. Any ideas?

Thanks.
David

All the ones I have seen are like that. Don't worry, be
happy and use it.

Probably from the manufacturing process.  Don't sweat it.

I read a lot about this oil impregnated air filter. Whats the deal with it? I've read something that if you don't use one it cane cause issues. Is that true?

The idea is that oil in the air filter better traps fine particles and prevents the mass airflow sensor (MAS) from going bad. You can see for yourself, look at an aftermarket one, like FRAM, and you will see it is bone dry, and the Nissan OEM has an oily residue on it.

Besides my local Nissan dealer has online parts, and I can buy it for the same price as the dealer would sell it to a shop ( is this wholesale price?)and I pick it up in person. My filter was $27 and it listed for $32. Fram filter was abut $22, so $5 for a piece of mind is a bargain, if you ask me.
