That whole piece surrounding the radio/heater assy. pulls out. Start at the bottom, then the top. One note of caution, do not unplug the air bag indicator light and then turn ign on, you will set an air bag code and cause the warning lite to flash. Leave that lite plugged in if you can while doing your process, just in case you turn the ign on. |

These seem to be the instructions that I found as well that were located in the shop manual. However, I bought my after-market radio from a well known east coast company that gives you step-by-step instructions on how do the entire installation. The instructions from the radio company were crystal clear, and they had me remove the panel in the dash over the radio first and then work downward.
Basically, the job is disgustingly easy, hard to believe. I had my old radio out in 15 minutes or so. A few cautions, however. Don't do the job while it is so freezing cold in the Northeast, the plastic is very brittle in the cold and may break. Secondly, if you buy a radio from the company I mentioned above (you can PM me if you want me to tell you the name of the company), they will send you an installation/trim kit included in the price, and you will also need a TORX driver, size 15. Thirdly, do the job while thier technical advice desk is open, because their instructions do not tell you what to do with some of the wires that don't match the wiring harness adopter they send you. Fourth, consider soldering all connections when you match the wiring harness adopter with the wires that plug into the radio.
The bottom line - it's worth it to get rid of the factory-installed radio. That thing is a piece of junk accoustically. I'm hearing music on my CD's that I never heard before, and the stereo separation is really awesome. The new radio is so much better, and I didn't spend much $$ on it. It fit right in using the installation kit they provided, and it looks like a really professional job. Next, I'm going to get rid of those paper plates in the doors that Nissan tells you are speakers. PM me if you have any questions. Hope this helps.
