Can anyone tell me about their experience with the "break-in" period on a new Frontier? I have the 4cyl Frontier SE but am only getting 19mpg right now (600 miles on it). I really like the truck, but I had read somewhere that I won't see the actual gas mileage until after approx. 1200 miles or so. Just wondering, thanks!

I took the 1200 miles to allow my 2007 Frontier V-6 to break in. Kept the overall speed down, didn't accelerate too quickly, etc. At 1200 miles, I changed the oil to Mobil 1 5W-30 with a Nissan filter. My truck now has 11,700 miles on it, burns NO oil and has given me as high as 25.5 miles per gallon highway at 60+ mph. I am always of the opinion that a careful break-in produces longevity and higher mpg. I keep vehicles 10+ years and so I'm willing to be patient at the front end.
And I also changed the two diffs and the transfer case fluids at 5000 miles. Mobil 1 75W-90 in the rear diff, Valvoline Semi Syn 80W-90 in the front diff and Nissan Matic D in the transfer case. Was amazed at how "dirty" those fluids looked and how much metallic "fur" was on the magnets. ALWAYS remove the filler plug before the drain plug, by the way. I had to use breaker bars to release them as they were way overtorqued. 25 foot pounds is the desired setting for putting the plugs back in with new metal washers.

Yeah, I'm taking it nice and easy as well. I'm planning on the truck last for a long time. Is the changing of the fluids you mentioned applicable for the 4x2 as well?

Check out mototuneusa.com It is not just for bikes, but all 4 stroke engines. Scroll down to Break In Secrets. Very good info. And as Boomer states, fluids are very critical to change also.

Yes, it's applicable to 2 wheel drive models except you don't have a transfer case and only a rear diff. Change the fluid in that one and the engine oil. Use the synthetics, keep good records for the warranty (sales slips and a hard bound notebook, cheap at Borders for about $5) and enjoy the ride.

So you've got an '08 SE 4 cyl. with what, a manual trans (rated at 19/23 mpg) or an automatic (rated at 17/22 mpg)? EPA mileage ratings were revised in '08 to be more representative of real world results and they, in fact, are. I drive my '07 XE manual trans sanely and my mileage runs 20/23. It's a little better than most around town because I tend to use 5th gear much more frequently than most drivers to keep the rpms down. Don't expect miracles from synthetic oils. You're pretty much in the ball park at 19 mpg. It may improve one mpg or so with the accumulation of miles, but you're pulling around 2 tons of truck with a 152 hp engine. If you're looking for optimum mileage, just keep your foot out of it unless absolutely necessary.

Automatic trans. I'm not upset w/ 19 mpg, especially b/c with the smaller engine revving at much higher rpm's, it makes me keep my foot off of the pedal (I need to) :) Thanks for all the help!

My new CC LB 2wd has 1100 miles on it and I've recorded 22.5 mpg on the hiway @ 70+ mph and 18.5 mpg around town mixed mileage. I think I can improve on the hiway figure when it breaks in and gets some more mileage on it.
