I am the owner of a 2005 Nissan Titan Crew Cab. I love the truck but the
cost of fuel is beyond what I can accept anymore. I get 11.5 mpg in town.
I am reluctantly considering downsizing. Almost everything is on the
table-Chevy Colorado, Tacoma, Dakota, and Frontier. I test drove a
Frontier when I purchased the Titan. I liked the ride alot. I opted for the
Titan as the milage estimates at the time weren't all that different. What
do you really get in town driving? I would want a crew cab 4 wd. I know
this is a Frontier forum and I'm leaning that way as I've heard of quality
issues with the Colorado. I want this to be my vehicle for awhile (I
thought the Titan was a long term deal, but...). I occaisionally tow a 3500
lb boat.

welcome to the forum, sorry to hear about your decision to get rid of the Titan, I do like those trucks as well, but I wouldn't get one based on fuel costs alone as well even if I could afford the Titan. My first question, is 4wd necessary, because already you are giving up some fuel efficiency off the bat. If it is, then that is a choice you will have to live with. I know there are various reports of people getting better than the EPa estimates, and also people getting worse, for whatever reasons on this board. Some have to do with modifications (lifts/ bigger tires/wheels/intake-exhaust and laying on the gas), others might be mechanical. The best way to save on fuel, as I'm sure you are well aware is to drive with anticipation of lights, don't speed, etc. No more preaching on that. With that said, my brother used to get better fuel economy I believe in his 2005 Frontier KC 2wd with the 4.0 than I do in my 2001 CC with the 3.3 and he had the added luxury of a beast of a 4.0 V6, he used to tow his offroad toy, a modified Cherokee on a 1000 lb trailer and he said it never gave him any real problems. The only real reason he got rid of his Fronty was that he had to drive it for work and was racking up a ton of miles. Good luck with your decision.

With the crappy winter-blend RFG gas we have to use here in Louisville, I've gotten as low as 13.3 MPG out of my 4.0 SE King Cab, but that's ALL stop and go headache-grade traffic, too. Normally, on the same gas, it's more like 15 mpg, again, not nearly as good as what I'd like.

On the highway, towing nothing at all, on the same gas, I get about 19.5 MPG.

If I take a trip out of town, using other gas, it gets 20.5-21 MPG. Doing the same, in the summertime, using summer-blend no-RFG, I've gotten as good as 21.9 MPG, which is acceptable, for the amount of power that nice 4.0 provides. This is a new truck, only 6 months old, so I don't know what it will do after it's really broken in, but so far, it hurts me at the pump. I'm used to the old 2.4 inline 4 in the other Nissan trucks I've owned, so this is painful, but I'm adapting, I guess.

I know the main culprit here is the ReFormulated Gas  (RFG) we have to use here because of the EPA, but I still don't like it.
