Hello everybody. I'm considering a new truck, and I am strongly leaning toward a Nissan Frontier. I've looked at all small and midsized pickups, and Nissan or Toyota are the only trucks that impress me. Toyota is too expensive, so I've settled on the Nissan.
Anyway, I've got a chance at a 2005 used Nissan Frontier. It's a crew cab, (4 door), with 30,000 miles on it. The trim is SE. I'm not too familiar with what that trim means, but I can tell you it has power windows and door locks, cruise control, cd player, and a tonneau cover. They have a sticker price of 21,440 dollars on it. This seems excessive to me since I can get a brand new one for about $3000 more. However, they take in trades so cheap, that I may be able to talk them down quite a bit, don't know for sure. They said they will honor a 100,000 mile warranty with this truck, and it will be a Nissan certified vehicle.
What do you guys think is a decent offer for this truck? The outside has a few scratches, but nothing scratching through the paint. Just kind of knicks and abrasions. The interior is a little dirty, but I assume they are going to clean it up before they sell it. Otherwise, the interior is in fine shape with no tears or permenant scars.
They just got this thing so they didn't get a chance yet to clean it up for resale. So, what do you say?

Welcome to the group!
It's good you got to see the truck before it gets detailed. A good detail job can cost a dealer $100 to over $400. I just spent six hours polishing headlight lenses on a '01 Sentra to save $300 bucks. The dealer may take 2 grand less to sell it "as is".
You do get a lot more for the money with the Frontiers. I almost bought a Taco but test drove a loaded Frontier with a lot more accessories for $2,000 less.

the SE trim is the base trim, and i don't think that's a very good price at all.
just as a reference, about a month ago, i bought a 2007 SE Crew Cab short bed for $21235 out the door (including taxes, tags, delivery, etc). $600 under list + rebate. the only thing you listed that i don't have is the tonneau cover, but we're talking about $300-$1000 new (depending on which one you get, $1k being paint-matched fiberglass). plus i have the bed extender.
i would suggest you try some negotiation over what's new on the lots with dealers and you should be able to get pretty much the same truck brand new for less than $1k more.
a quick glance at carmax locally here (DC area) shows they're selling 05 crew cabs in the same price range, but they're NISMOs and have a much higher initial value than an SE.

Hummmmmmmmmmmmm…. I didn’t know the SE was now the low grade truck. In 1999 SE was the top of the line in Frontier King Cabs.

Yes, I figured that price was high, but i kinda figured, knowing how dealers are, I could probably talk them down a few grand, like maybe even down to 17000.00.
Now, I know I'll never get a new one for that price, so would this be ok price, or do you guys think that I'm better off going new? Keep in mind, I'm trying to make payments as low as possible. Also, this truck will be used for work a little bit. Not to haul anything real heavy, but I will be in sort of dirty work clothes. It would suck to have on dirty clothes, while climbing into a brand new Frontier.

Man that is way too much cake for that truck! Spend a couple bucks more and get a 07 SE KC hold over with zero miles. There are still deals out there. Are the rebates still being offered? Good luck what ever you do they are great trucks.

I'm under such a tight budget right now, I can't see the extra bucks right now for the new 07. I have a tax bill to pay off. Once that's paid, I could do the new truck, but by then the 07's will be gone. By the way, what's a SE KC?

From what I can see, these Frontiers, or maybe all Nissan's in general, hold their resale value very well. Around here, they are a little pricey, but when I bought mine a few months ago, I realized very quickly why they hold their resale value. They are nice vehicles for sure.

That's a beautiful truck, smitty. I guess I don't have much problem paying that kind of cash for a good truck that will last me a long time, however, when I can get a brand new one with no miles on it for only $2000 more, it's hard to ignore.

Yeah but it only looks good when it's cleaned up. Today was wash/wax day for it. With it being black, and me living in Texas, I only have to wash it about 3 times a week, lol
Whatever you do, don't EVER buy a black vehicle.
