Don't get me wrong, I love my new 2006 Frontier SE. Everything about it is accurate as advertised except for the the mileage I'm getting which is terrible . The brochure says 16/21. The dealer even topped that and says best case scenario could be up to 25, but I'm getting about 13 city & 16 highway. I know the heavier frame has something to do with that and I'm not complaining. I expect sub-22 mpg from a truck with a V6 but not 16 on freeways.
I'm not a lead-foot driver and most of the time I drive alone with an empty bed so payload is not an issue here. Some say the fact that its new and the engine has not been broken in may have something to do with it (I hope they're right ). Aside from that, are there any other reason why my mpg is so pathetic? Are there others out there getting the same mpg I'm getting?
Regardless, I still love my Frontier would never give it up for anything else (except for maybe a Titan which I assume would have an even worse mpg. It's the most awesome looking truck period.

My MPG has dropped in the last few months so I called the dealer. They told me that newer vehicles dont get as good as mileage when the temperature gets cold out. I live in Missouri and it has gotten pretty chilly for these parts. I did some research on the internet and found this to be true. It takes longer for the engine to reach operating temperature and therefore will not be as efficient.

Well, it makes sense that prolonged idling would contribute to the drop in mpg. Question is how much mpg loss would you incur by idling for 2-5 minutes. i read from another forum that it's ok to just jump in and drive off without idling since idling only warms up the engine and not the tranny anyways. I'm not so sure about that since I've gotten into the habit of warming up the truck at least 5 minutes every morning. I live in California and warming up the cabin prior to driving is not much of an issue. I just do it because it seems like the right way to do esp. if you have an older vehicle. But does anyone know if its really safe to operate the engine when its cold? I guess I'll do whatever it takes to improve my mpg as long as it would not harm the engine

I dont necessarily let my truck idle long before I drive it. I start it and let it idle for about 30 seconds then take off. I dont give er hell or anything like that. I have read that too that it is not necessary to let your truck "warm-up" before driving it, especially with synthetic oil. It has better flow characteristics at cold temperatures. I use Mobil 1 synthetic. It has warmed up in the past week and I have seen a jump in MPG of about 1.5mpg. Craziest thing I have ever seen. Something else I though about, cold air is denser than warm air so would your engine use more fuel to balance that out? I get off at 130 in the morning and I have been paying attention to how long I have to drive before my temp. gauge starts to move and when it reaches operating temperature. There is quite a bit of difference when it is 15 out compared to 50.

Most vehicles hit their best mpg around 40,000 miles.

Brand spanking New 07 4x4, Crew Cab, Automatic, Long Bed
*Differential Ratio 3.357
On my 1st. tank of gas I averaged 16.42 mpg. on Unleaded Regular.
-This driving was Steep, Curvy Mountain Terrain traveling into Borrego
Springs, as well as 80 MPH highway driving, and City driving mixed in
too.
It covered it all.
Be specific about all pertinent information if you want an accurate
comparison. Apples to Apples.

yes, cold can do that because the gas is mixed with a anti freezing agent. in my tacoma during the winters here in st george utah i would get 21 mpg freeway. and that was a 2.4l i4. my frontier lately sense i bought it hasnt gotten worse that 19.xxx mpg. is has avereged to about 19.3 ish. i have gotten alll the way to 19.879 on one fill up and it was long freeway trip, minnersville utah to mesquite nevada and back home to laverkin utah.
so from my experences the cold weather gas is what makes the mpg go down. sucks but it is life. just like the high gas prices. but it has gotten me intreaged that my i4 tacoma only got 4 mpg better and it was 2wd, extendo cab, i4. not v6, crew cab, 4x4. now that is a plus for nissan.

I'm getting around 19 mpg with mixed driving (70/30 HW/CT)
Love the truck, my trip computer reads around 22 when I'm cruising around 60 - 65 after a reset. I can't complain!
