I HAVE A 2006 FRONTIER XE 4 CYL. THE OWNERS MANUAL SHOWS NO REPLACEMENT FOR THE AIR FILTER. WHY IS THIS? WOULD I BE BETTER GOING WITH THE K&N FILTER OR NOT. THANK YOU

Yes and no depending upon how you drive.  A K&N will give you more power, with the possibility of better gas mileage.  Most people complain their mileage went down.  But usually they tend to drive harder considering they have the more power.

My Highlander got about 2-3 more MPG on the highway.  It has a display (which is about 3 MPG off) but it gives me a good idea on how it's doing.  Though to give you an idea on how much of difference it will make.

STOCK

55 MPH ~ AVG 23/24 MPG (Actual, not displayed)
Floored ~ Lowest displayed was 5.2 MPG

K&N

55 MPH ~ AVG 26/29 MPG (depending upon wind, and major factor in South Dakota)
Floored ~ 1.2 MPG displayed

As you can see, if I go around flooring it all the time it will be worse, I take my time and the benifits are there.

I was thinking about getting a aem brute force intake.  With how the air box is on the my frontier ('06) do you think I could get a K&N filter and get almost the same performance out of it, but just lose the woosh noise that a cai would make?

I AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH ANYTHING BUT THE AIR FILTER, AND I CAN TELL YOU IT IS WELL WORTH THE MONEY!
