Hey all,

My brother is thinking of getting a midsize truck. He is down to either Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier.

The Nissan does have significant advantages over Toyota: rear disc brakes, fully-boxed frame (mini Titan frame), and ATRAC + rear locker engagement (at the same time like Xterra, right????). Toyota has a  better interior, proven 4x4 history, and long history of reliability.

However, the Tacoma has a problem with the rear axle + locker because many owners have blown their gears in the rear axle with minimal off-roading.

Beyond that, both trucks are very close in everything. Edmunds alternates winners in two comparo between the two.

Have you guys heard of anything mechanically wrong with the Nissan Frontier or Xterra (since they share same platform)??

Thanks a lot in advance.
Thai.

yes both trucks are very good trucks, if i was going to be in the market for a new midsize truck these would be the two...the dodge/mitsu is a waste in my opinion especially for the engine/gas, it gets worse than both and only slightly more torque than the frontier with their V8 and the fronty makes more HP than any of the choices

2006 Models                     Frontier 4wd         &nb sp;        Tacoma 4wd Access cab

                                    265 HP @ 5600 rpm         &nb sp;         &nb sp;  236HP @ 5200 rpm

                                   285 ft/lbs @ 4000         &n bsp;         &n bsp;         &n bsp;266 ft/lbs @ 4000

I believe the 2007 numbers are virtually the same for power.

as far as better interior...that's very subjective and each person assesses that obviously on their  aesthetic values. i liked the fronty interior when my brother had noe before he traded it for his titan, both are very nice trucks. as far as major mechanical issues...i don't own a new fronty...so some of the other members might be better able to tell you any stuff they've had to deal with but i don't remember anythign on here that was huge and recurring as far as major mechanical issues yet

both manufacturers are capable 4x4 producers

my front diff  (on an 06 se) *looks* aluminum, but i don't actually know.

honestly, you don't buy a midsize 4x4 truck and expect it to be a ridiculous beast offroad without modification.  if you are looking for sick offroading, you WILL have to modify just about ANY truck. IMO if you want sick offroading, get a beater so you don't really have to worry about it.  if you want a balanced truck that is capable off road and still drives nice on the road, get a new frontier.

another HUGE concern is price.  in my area nissan will drop the price below sticker while toyota will not.  i was able to get my frontier for about 5-6000$ cheaper than a comparable tacoma; thats a significant difference when you are talking about trucks that average about 25,000$-30,000$ list price.

IMO the frontier has a better interior.
