I have a new D40 Navara (southern hemisphere fronty) and have recently completed a 9000 Km trip through outback central and western Australia (see pics elsewhere on this forum, albeit poorly posted - sorry mods).

Truck has the 2.5 litre diesel and 5 speed auto.

My question is about fuel consumption - my consumption of the blacktop is a very respectable 10.3 - 10.8 litres/100Km at 100 clicks (KPH), however is a very poor 16 - 17 litres/100Km when the going gets a bit tougher. I was hoping for 14 - 15 at worst on sandy tracks and low sand dunes, similar to the 4.2 litre Patrol.

Average speed on these tracks is 40 - 60 clicks, and the auto trans wants to hunt around in third gear all day, resulting in engine revs of 1900 - 2100 RPM, which sops the fuel up. I suspect that the auto trans program chip is tuned for the petrol engine which peaks torque at much higher revs than the oilburner. Nissan Australia lists the same auto trans chip for both engines - my dealership don't know which it is optimised for.

Is there anyone out there with similar or opposing experiences, better still with any knowledge of manufacturer or after market chips to better match the auto trans to the oilburner?

I would need a site with specs.  You might get lucky if another guy from overseas comes over, as us U.S. members don't have the diesel option.

Apparently people are fixing this issue with the aftermarket chip from DPChips (http://www.dpchip.com/about.html).

I'm also a aussie whos just put in his order for a d40 awaiting arrival at the end of the month.  I'm also putting one of this chips in my grandfathers gu 3.0 auto diesel patrol in the next week or so.

Will let you know how I go.

Lee.

G'Day lpryor, did you get the 6 speed manual or the auto?

15,000 Km down the track I'm now thinking that getting the auto trans was right for my overall usage, albeit the wrong trans for the outback.

These after market chips you refer to increase engine power and torque. I want something that will make the autotrans make better use of the torque at low engine revs, for example move the shift profile down a bit so that I can jog along outback tracks in 4th or 5th at low revs and low ground speed.

Nonetheless I will be keen to hear how the DPChip goes in your D40.

Hi Eregnans.

Still waiting for my truck... should be here in early feb.

I bought the 2.5 auto also as most of my driving is to work and back (200km round trip) The dpchip (from the people I have spoken to) increases power and torque which then holds the gears longer before shifting therefore reducing the up/down shifting all the time.

The best part of the dpchip is that it goes in after the ecu so it doesn't cause bogus errors in the ecu.

I'm putting one in a 3l patrol for the exact issue you are describing and will see how it goes in a few weeks.

Cheers,
Lee.

Hi Lee,

Please let us know how the chip  performs in the Patrol, and later in the D40. What you are saying sounds like what I am looking for, however I don't understand how it will acheive this.

Where are you located - I am in Ferny Creek, outer eastern Melbourne ?

Cheers

Will do.

I'm located on the Sunshine Coast just north of Brisbane.
