I own a 2001 Nissan Frontier with a manual transmission
that has about 186K miles on it. I have noticed two
particular issues with my trans recently. The first
being, when the truck is running and the trans is in
neutral a distinct grinding noise can be heard. When I
depress the clutch, the noise stops. The second problem
is when I put the trans in gear and start driving, a
distinct knock can be heard that increases with speed.
This knock can now be heard in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th
gear. For some reason, when I am in 4th gear everything
seems to run smooth as day.
I've been told it could be the throw bearing. I'm not
really sure. I just changed the trans. fluid (it was
pretty much completely black & sludgy) and there was
quite a bit of metal shavings and a few decent size metal
flakes in the fluid. I would assume this is a red flag.
Anyways, any suggestions as to what the problem could be
would be very helpful. Thanks

Could be a throwout bearing or an internal bearing in the trans. If it were mine, I would have it torn down in light of the metal you are finding and have it gone over. OR....find another trans in a junkyard and use that. Either will cost you money and you need to decise if the truck is worth it at this point.

..
If the plugs in the transmission don’t have magnets in them
drill a hole but not all the way through and J.B.Weld
magnets in them. It’s too late for this transmission but it
will help the next one. There might be a chunk of debris
stuck between some gear teeth causing the knock.
Good luck with it.. Don S..

Preciate it the help. I just finished pulling it down and
the throw bearing was intact. I rotated the shaft of the
transmission by hand and could hear the knock and other
particles in there rattling around. Being that I'm a
college student, I'll probably try my luck with the
junkyards and hope I come across something decent. Thanks
again!

there are 6 bearings in the trans that need to be replaced
even if you only find one bad, due to the fact that all
that black crud and metal has been going through all the
bearings, along w/ seals and gaskets. It is an easy trans
to rebuild with the proper tools and knowledge. The reason
it is quiet in 4 is due to the fact that the main shaft and
counter shaft are spinning at the same speed( 1:1 ratio). I
have seen the counter shaft bearings fail to the point of
allowing the shaft to drop down and damage the gears, that
gets real expensive. Been a long time since I've had one
apart.

Been looking for an old one in the junkyard but the
cheapest one I've found so far is for $1150 with 126k miles
on it. So I'm going to try my luck with a rebuild kit from
autozone. I've already started pulling the trans apart and
one of the two front bearings were shot and one of the two
on the very backside were shot. The two middle bearings are
quite a bit harder to get to. The snap rings on this thing
are a pain to get off. Any tricks for getting those things
off would be great.

I finally got the front half of the bell housing off and
unfortunately two of the gears have been damaged pretty
bad. So I currently have two bad bearings and two bad
gears. I'm still having trouble getting to those two middle
bearing because of those snap rings.

AGAIN, all the bearings need to be replaced due to the crap
that has been run through them. High quality snap ring
pliers are a must.
