I have a 2000 Frontier Crew Cab XE V6 98k.  I have never got over 18mpg and I am usually around 16.  Most of my driving is in the suburbs of chicago.  I have not modified my truck at all.  Is there any thing that I can do for better gas mileage?

I had one just like it, and to answer you question, unfortunately no. I put duel exhaust and k$n filter on mine with no change. about 17.6 was about as good as it got out 100% freeway. My dad made the mistake of having jet tweak his ecu on his 2002 xe crew. no apparent increase in power and killed his gas mileage. put that on your no list.

Gentlemen;

... At speeds above 30 mph Aerodynamic drag begins to eat into fuel mileage.

If I had a crew cab I’d remove the top carrying rack to improve highway fuel mileage. I think the camper shell I put on the bed may be helping a little. My ’99 3.3 KC 4x4 got 21 mpg on our last 2,000 mile trip and 18 around town. The first four years it averaged 23+ on the highway.

One time in a strong head wind on the highway I folded the outside mirrors to reduce drag.  Laugh2

Here is an article about fuel mileage:

i did some mpg tests on my truck which is a '01 CC SE and i have never gotten better than mid 18 mpg on my truck and that is including several weeks of driving with the air dam removed from the front of the roof rack..i honestly don't think that it makes a huge difference from what i've seen b/w those two diff tests i ran, now i would like to ask some of those who have CC's that have no roof rack on top to see what their mpg would be, however i woudl suspect they also wouldn't be getting much more than 18 mpg

i don't believe that the tubular roof rack on the 2nd generation frontiers at highway speeds and around town is gonna make that big of a difference in your mpg. but as i stated before ask around and see if some of the members on here that don't have bed covers, and do not have roof racks see greater mpg on their fronty.

i do believe lakota would see a bigger difference on his truck with a shell on it just like people see with bed covers on their truck...with some evidence in researching that i've done giving the edge to shells that are flush with the cabs on aggregate mpg.

i've heard that going to competely synthetic oil has made a diff for some people..but that difference is probably very slight, but hey you gotta take it where you can get it.

the biggest difference however would be from driving extremely conservatively, i have definitely changed how i drive since i got my fronty, but i'm not independently wealthy to afford unlimited stops at chevron (which i've also noticed that my truck seems to like the best, using valero and some others stuff like shell..i got a horrible sulfur smell, and when the question was posed to nissan staff they indicated that they message they got was that the gas around here in texas has high sulfer content and can sometimes give off that smell, which i noticed after shutting engine off and exiting the truck.) with chevron i don't get that and seem to get the best milage even with the cheapest gas.

as far as exhaust..i stopped some kid that i saw that had a custom dual exhaust on his fronty and asked him how it was working out for him and he indicated that he liked it, and helped his mileage out so i don't know how the individual who indicated his exhaust didn't help his out, but then again i just had to take what the kid said at face value too.
