The brake lights do not come on when the brake pedal is pushed. I replaced both bulbs, the fuses are good, and when hot wired the brake lights activate. the mechanic replaced some sort of switch but that did not solve the problem-he stated the problem is IN the transmission-an expensive repair. Any ideas ?

well first the specs on your truck would help. Secondly
I'd be leaning more towards a broken wire or a
loose/corroded connector. The fact the mechanic just
replaced the brake light switch, and obviously didn't check
(takes all of 2 seconds) would leave me looking for a
different mechanic.
A test light and some time will track down where the broken
connection is. Because the only thing I remember the
transmission having anything to do with a light is the
reverse light.
