i have replaced my knock sensor, belts, spark plugs, wires and air filter but for
some reason im still going into spark knock there are no codes being thrown
no check engine and no codes without check engine light coming on. So my
question is wha am i not seeing? I havent checked the timing yet im not sure
but i might have skipped a tooth on my timing belt. I only put premium gas
that has no ethanol in it and is 93 octane. Basically when im driving i can see
that im getting 7.5 lbs of boost then out of no where it drops to 3 lbs i know
this cause i have a boost gauge. i have noticed that it will drop when im in
third gear or in second when im at 3500 rpm im so pissed I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!
im really close to taking it to a nissan dealership and paying them to do a
diagnostic test on it for like $90 an hour but i know it has to be something
simple that im not seeing!

Define TB do you mean timing belt or throttle body?

NO, no and no. Well , maybe! It would depend on which cam
is off in relation to the crank. If the crank and left cam
had the correct count of teeth between them, there would be
no DTC, there are not cam sensors for each cam, only the
left one which is the distributor. Are you sure the drop in
boost is not normal for this engine at that RPM? If you are
getting spark knock, it would retard the timing.

On a related matter, my neighbor had a 90's Infinity, with the VG motor, and there was a knock upon acceleration. You could rev it under no load, it would knock. It also knocked upon acceleration from a stop light. He too had no check engine light indications. It had 52K miles on it, he paid the dealer to diagnose it, he was told to have the timing belt changed. He protested since it did not call for the belt to be replaced at this mileage, but dealer countered and said the powertrain is fine, not broken, therefore no warranty repair is needed.
Dealer did say that if the belt caused engine failure, then yes, warranty would cover a new engine.

He ended up having the belt replaced, and the sound was gone, ended up keeping the car and had no issues for years.
( this occurrence happened about 15 years ago)

One more thing I forgot to mention I had a 94 pathfinder with the VG motor I decided to do the timing belt when the water pump leaked and did not realize that I was off a tooth when putting the belt back on until I had it smogged months later, the timing was off and it would not pass.

I did not want to mess with the distributor to adjust timing since it was never changed (the timing) since the day I bought it. I took the front cover off and the right cam was off a tooth, I had no symptoms.. strange....
