New to the forum. I finally decided to join. I'm on the tail end of a head gasket replacement (my first one ever). So far, so good. EXCEPT, that I have discovered a threaded hole on the front of the driver's side cylinder head, under the distributor deck, and I don't know what goes in there. I removed the heads about three months ago and took them to the machine shop. I don't recall looking at that part of the head, much less removing something from there, so I don't know what it's for. After I picked them up, I saw the hole and I don't know if they removed something from there and didn't tell me. It would appear that it fits a sensor OR a plug. Can anyone help me out? I'm going to try adding photo here...

Blow air or pour some water into the coolant passage next
to the intake port and see if it comes out the hole. Don't
recall anything going in there, but then again, @ 58, I
don't recall a lot of things!!!! Were the heads warped or
you just had them cleaned up? Only allowed to remove .004
from the surface, any more and the head is NG.

I'm starting to think that nothing goes in there. I've been looking elsewhere on the net and I've only found a couple of entries relating to this hole. In a different forum, someone asks what the sensor pictured in the hole is called, and someone responds that it's the cylinder head temperature sensor. But most of the info I have found states that vg33e does not have that sensor, only the vg30. Is it possible that it's an unusable relic of the vg's past?? My Frontier is 2001. Will someone verify this...looking behind the timing cover, under the distributor base. Thanks. By the way, I believe the heads were simply cleaned up...the machine shop did not tell me that they were warped or cut. Here's a pic of that sensor

So, since it's not a sensor I need, should it have a plug?? Where would I get such a plug?
Thanks guys.

Use air into the hole and see if it connects to a coolant
passage. If it does you'll just need a brass plug. If I
could easily get to the heads for Max I could take a look,
but they're buried right now.

kcidmil, Really, it is 80's. I just looked @ a Genuine
Nissan 88 Max repair manual and that hole is where the
sensor goes, also on earlier years including the Z. 89 or
90 they put the sensor in the upper outlet housing. I used
to have to remove the sensor to clean the connections or
replace it w/o removing the timing belt cover. (ah the good
old days!!!)lol back at ya'.

Just to update you all...I found a plug for that hole. I purchased it at Napa Auto Parts for about $3 and it does the job. It took me a while, but I've put the engine back together and it's running like a champ again.
