Hey guys.  I have a 2007 SE CC 4X4 with 64K on it.  Great condition and have had zero problems.  Just recently, I noticed a slightly audible whining when I accelerate.  As a I accelerate, the pitch of the whine goes higher.  No change in performance. Any ideas?

Sounds like the secondary timing chain, many youtube videos on it. I noticed my whine at 40K and have had it replaced under warranty.
This is a known nissan problem with the VQ 4 liter engine.
Other than that, the engine is expected to hold up well.

Does it sound like it's coming from the motor, or just all
around. You'll also get a feedback whine in the stereo
system if you have a bad ground. Recently done any stereo
work? Or using a plug in MP3 transmitter?

thanks for the feedback.  Noise is from engine only...no sound from stereo.  How difficult is the timing chain change?  THanks again!

Go ahead and do a google search NTB09-128.
Looks like it is a 4.6 hour job in the dealer, it is complicated. Nissan is not recalling the timing chain however they have issued a technical bulletin, which basically means if a customer complains of this noise prior to 60K, it's covered under the power train warranty.
It would not hurt to stop by at the dealer to see if they might be able to hear you.

You can also do a search on this nissanfrontier forum under "timing chain" in the search area.

David

Go see your dealer, even though you are out of warranty
they may be able to apply for "GOODWILL". Seeing this is a
well known problem.

As I looked at this technical bulletin, ,it says to change the oil, looks like my dealer did not do that, I have a non nissan oil filter on it still.
Is it a requirement or courtesy?

Yes, the oil change is part of the procedure.

..

If the work order only says change the oil thats all they do. I'm the only one that ever changed oil and filter on my Frontier... and it's 13 years old... And... I know it was always done correctly. I had the oil plug fall out of the pan on a Sentra that the dealer had changed.

Have a good one.. Don S..

Sorry, when I said "oil change", I meant oil and filter.
Hey lakota, let's not be so hard on the dealers, there are
a few good ones out there.
