I don' t mean the 3500 as stated in owner's manual, I mean how much
can that transmission take, should i choose to squeeze a little more
power out of the motor? I use my truck for work amd towing weekly,
and I have to push it pretty hard to maintain highway speed with an
empty 1000 lb flatbed...

Just got back to Houston, Tx from Hot Spring, AR towing a Suzuki Sidekick on a custom built 12 X 6.5 ft trailer. I haven't run the set up across the scales yet, but I will this weekend when I take my daughter's Sidekick up for a day of wheeling and will let you know.  Trailer should be around 650 lbs, sidekick is about 2600 with the rock sliders and other stuff added. I do have a 7pin connector and brake controller wired in and it stops better with the trailer than empty... gotta love dual trailer axles with brakes.

I ran in 4th gear almost the complete trip, 5th even on flat land would actually start losing speed. My truck has 218K on the clock so it doesn't run as strong as it once did. Before the trip, I changed out all the fluids to synthetic and welded up the cracked manifold, that needs to be done again or a header installed. I averaged an amazing 17 MPG for the whole trip. I ran in the 65-70 and once in awhile got up to 75 during the trip and it went great. I wish it was a crew cab or long bed or something to help it not be such a balancing act to get the load right.
