Hey all, brand new here with a lot of questions.
A quick background of the truck: Got a 2002 V6 supercharged Frontier 4X4
about 5 months ago. Whoever had it before me did several things to it
that I'm now working around. Here is what they did:
- ghetto rigged a flowmaster muffler underneath and added a dual
exhaust. It was ghetto rigged because it was the wrong type of exhaust
for the truck, and plus wasn't meant for dual exhaust so it ended up
just getting incredibly hot and creating a ton of drag. Not to mention
the mufflers (though they looked really cool) were getting so hot they
were constantly disconnecting from it's supports which was really
annoying. Anyway, i just got the whole thing removed and put on a stock
muffler until I decide what I want to do permanently.
- Put too big of tires on it. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for big tires
and plan on getting bigger. The problem is that they didn't lift it up
at all. They lifted it via the torsion bars as much as they possibly
could and still had to get spacers that make the wheels stick out on the
sides. All that and the front 2 STILL rub on the fenders pretty bad
when i hit certain inclines.
- Tinted the back windows so dark I literally can't see out at night
- Doesn't have much to do with them, more of a general thing about the
truck, but the mpg is awful. Worse than I was expecting. I took the camper off the back as soon as I got it, so it's not being weighed down by that. I've been
getting about 13 mpg on the highway (that's about 230 miles out of a
full tank of 16 gallons). And it was sucking power somewhere too. I
realize all vehicles run better when they're cooler, but holy crap when
it got cold in texas a month or so ago, she would be WAY WAY more
powerful in the morning. Then after running for 5 minutes or so she
feels like she's dragging again. I thought this had a lot to do with the
muffler fiasco, but after I switched out to the stock muffler, i got
WORSE mileage than before and no real performance difference! What the
heck?!
Anyway....
I love this truck despite these little annoyances. And I want to get her
out offroad ASAP. What I WANT to do, and need your help with
regarding what the best options are:
1. Get that dad-gum lift so the wheels actually fit.
2. Get a good cool air system. I figure this will kick up the power a good bit and get me some much needed mpg back.
3. Get a good exhaust that sounds nice and wont suck power. Maybe do
that sexy dual-exhaust again because it really did look nice.
4. Get one of those badass shrockworks front bumpers and some spotlights.
5. Date a supermodel.
So that's it. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated!!
Cheers from Texas.

Nice looking truck. Are you running hi-test in it? Any
particular supermodel???????? Oh, don't forget pictures!(of
the supermodel)!!!!!!!!!!!! Just had another thought, have
it scanned for knock sensor code, may have a malfunction
which will retard the timing.

Back in the 80's my dad wanted tubeless tires on his F250 (1967) and the only way to do it was to get 16.5 inch rims (stock was 16). He did that, speedo showed .8 miles for every mile driven and the speedo showed 45 when he was doing 60,, larger tires throw off the speedo and mileage, is that a possibility in this case?
Nice truck!

My old man taught me ratio and proportion with that speedo being off....If 80% of my miles are 300, how far did I really go?
Answer 375

that's something you'll have to compensate for when
figuring up your fuel mileage. If you google Tire size
calculator you should come across one on a miata forum.
I usually use this to figure out how much my speedo is
now off. Input the stock size and then input your size
and it'll give you the difference. Then when you fill up
take the mileage you just driven and times it by that,
add the product to the mileage and that's approx what you
just driven. I think you'll find you're getting better
than what you think.
I had a F250 at one point with 35" tires. Figuring up
just with what was shown on my trip meter i was only
getting around 14 mpg, but once compensated for the
slower speedometer because of the tires I was actually
getting closer to 18 mpg.

Thanks for the replies, guys.
The mileage unfortunately is accurate as it was a drive that i've done a million times and know the exact distance already.
Does anybody have any suggestions for a cool air intake for this truck? I think I'm gonna try and get that knocked out first.
Cheers

Take your pick. AEM, K&N, AFE, Volant.. etc etc.
Honestly stick some of the name brands vs going with some
weird off brand.
Honestly I prefer AEM bruteforce. Less oil than most of
the others that's real easy to take care of. One of the
largest used for trophy truck series.
btw, I would put the topper back on. Cuts down on the
drag you'll experience at highway speeds. Youtube
Mythbusters comparison for tailgate, no tailgate. Also
the stock exhaust can be real restrictive, cutting down
your performance. Letting the motor breath easier with a
good exhaust and intake helps with performance, helping
your mileage.
For those who like to do this and claim it made it worse,
quit flooring it to get the sweet sound and drive
conservatively. Or keep giving it a little more gas to
get the beautiful sound and quit complaining your mileage
is suffereing.
