Hmm... it could be quite a few things.  But I would have to take a guess as to either a Valve O-ring, or Head Gasket.

Has there been a loss of power along with the burning oil?

Well I am always have a load on the truck, I dont think so, Im geting close to 300miles a tank with the heavy loads(thats good right).  I bought the truck with quite a few miles already on her so I wouldnt know if its holding back. She has always cranked up and never had a problem besides with the oil.

Hi folks. I'm having the same problem and making the oil
company richer! My 04 is using a lot of oil—no drips—just
low a lot. And the terrible dipstick is hard to figure
out! Mileage at about 250k. Is it the valves letting oil
into the mix or what?

Stripes,

Welcome to the Forum.

You really should start a New Thread, cause this Thread
is 17 year's old.

It could be several thing's and You should get it checked
out by a Mechanic that has Good Experience with the Gen 1
Frontier's.

Right off the Bat,, the PCV Valve come's to mind,, but
like I said, it could be several thing's @ 250K Mile's.

Don't keep driveing the Truck like this, cause many
thing's can be damaged by this excess Oil, includeing the
Cat's & Plug's. One problem can easily SnowBall into
Several Problem's and The Cost's to Repair can Escalate
beyond feasible.

If you want to get more mile's out of This Truck,, this
issue must be addressed asap.

Good Luck,
